I purchased a 1999 Fleetwood Discovery in November and just received title. The title says 2000 Freightliner. All my purchase papers say 1999 Fleetwood discovery. Is this normal or did someone screw up. It does have the Freightliner chasis.

jgh,
I would check the vin# some one may have mis-read it. In any case it should read fleetwood or discovery not chassis manufacturer. mine says 2004 monaco not 2004 workhorse.

I have a 98 pace arrow. It is titled as a 99. The vin is what the state goes by. My pace is a 98 but my chassis is a 99. Most of the time it is the other way around, but Ford went from a 97 to a 99 chassis.

I agree. Our title says "2012 Fleetwood." No where does it reference the chassis on the title, except for the VIN number.

I think it simply depends on the state it registered in.
For the year, most will go by the VIN (10th digit gives year) but some do title by model year. For the manufacturer, a lot seem to go by coach builder but some do go only by chassis manufacturer (e.g. when we imported our mh from Minnesota to Ontario, Canada, the manufacturer on the title went from PACE (for Pace Arrow) to CHEV because it's a Chev chassis).

If they do, they are violating federal law. By federal law, the vehicle year and make is established by the original Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin, which the factory delivered to the dealer along with the coach. The manufacturer of the completed vehicle, Fleetwood in this case, issued the MCOA, not Freightliner. The factory puts their own model year on the MCOA, regardless of what the chassis year may be. Often the chassis will be a year (or two) older than the coach model year, but once in awhile the chassis year advances before the coach body year changes and you get a situation like Jgh's.
Freightliner issued the VIN with the chassis, but that is NOT the governing year for the title. Sometimes a DMV clerk gets carried away and changes the year during a title update, probably using the VIN as you described. However, that is flat wrong and somebody high enough in the DMV will know it and get it fixed if it is pointed out to them.
Give Fleetwood a call and ask them what year they assigned to your coach. You should have the Fleetwood ID (FIN) available when you call, but they can probably track it form the VIN as well.

Quite normal, there's even a Federal Law on it. The manufacturer buys the chassis, and puts the "house" on it. They are then the manufacturer of the completed vehicle and they set the model year.
Some states (against the law) use the VIN# to set the year of the unit. They need to be set straight and do the model year correctly.
There used to be a page on the RVIA site that gave all the info. I don't find it right now.

Fleetwoood and Freightliner say title should be 1999 Fleetwood Discovery. I sent title back to seller to be corrected.

Good idea! It could cause you trouble down the road if it isn't corrected now.

That's good; you definitely want the title to be correct.

OK, I found a copy of the RVIA .pdf file on split year registration and posted it on one of my websites.
