The fuel line from the MH tank to the generator is notorious for cracking. When it has cracks the fuel pump delivers more air than fuel.
Remove the fuel line at the generator. If you can't syphon fuel out of the MH tank through that line or get air bubbles, you have cracks in the fuel line.
The line taps into the top of the MH tank and the tank usually has to be dropped to replace the fuel line.

The gen. starts on 12V and switches over to internal 12V after starting. If it only runs while you hold the start button down, you have problem with the board or the internal 12V generating magnets. (most likely the board.) As for the rod, it sounds like oil pressure sensing system is malfunctioning. This gen. uses oil press. to keep a steady speed. (it slows down the oil press. drops it gives it more gas, it speeds up the press. goes up it gives it less gas)

Look in the files section and download the service manual I uploaded.
I had this same problem. First make sure you have at least 1/2 tank of gas, then check all ground straps to make sure you have a good, clean ground.
My problem was the exact same and what I found was 1 wire all the way in the back behind the carb was chewed through by a mouse. Had to use a flashlight and mirror to find it( wasn't going to drop the genset) once the wire was spliced back together it worked like a charm.
