Granite countertops

Any ideas on how much weight granite countertops in kitchen and bath area would add as comparable to standard RV materials? Any other thoughts on the subject?
Thanks!

A lot! You do not want to use regular granite in a motorhome.

We just replaced our corian kitchen and bath tops. You would be amazed at how much that weighs and granite weighs even more.

I would do it. I wouldn't worry so much about the increased weight as i would making sure your weight distribution side to side is pretty even. If your dinette is opposite your kitchen it would offset nicely. The composites they use are not light to begin with and many granite fabricators can use a thinner cut of granite for the tops and add an edge to make it look thicker. Im sick of how easy the stock counters scratch. Mine are made from some product by LG. Need to find out what they use to polish the scratches out. I think they recommend a special grade of scotch brite but it would be easier if there was a more readily available product.

There are engineered granite overlays that fit over current counter top materials. Sort of like the way BathFitter goes over your current tub. Can't vouch for their quality or reliability, but if you're set on the granite look, they'd weigh considerably less than solid granite.

X2, have always thought this would be a good solution for an update.

A 3/4" (20 mm) thick granite countertop weighs about 13 lbs/sq ft. 1-1/4" (30 mm size) weighs around 18 lbs/sq ft. Corian is a little more than 1/2 that, but usually installed in 1" thickness, or 1/2" with thicker (1") bead around the edges for looks.

That said, you probably don't have enough countertop to worry much about it. Maybe adds 150-200 lbs altogether.

Gary, those weights fit what I was thinking. Your right, the little bit of counter space really wouldn't make a difference

A concern I would have is that granite is brittle. I wonder how well it would stand up to the vibration and bumps of rattling down the road. My bounder has counter that wraps around behind and next to the range where the width is only 2-3 inches. I'd be very concerned about that snapping off.

I would consider whether the existing cabinets would support the weight. Some RV cabinets are pretty flimsy.

Thanks, guys! I really appreciate all the advice. We are presently looking at a Revolution that has had granite installed. It IS beautiful, but I needed to get some input from you all. Let me say this... I will NEVER take your wise counsel for granite.
