Today I thought my ground fault plug that control the 110 A/C power in the motor-home went back, so I pulled it from the wall and was surprised that instead of typically wiring it instead had 5 to 6 wies, and it looks as if the ground fault potions of the plug was wire independently from the rest other plug, I did not have to replaced it today but it got me wondering if this is typical of what has been installed in vintage motorhomes and if there is a replacement, and or if it did need to be replace would the one that are sold today work being they do not accept that many wire, or was I confuse by the count of wires that I am just confused but it and it is no different that those sold today.

There is an input and output side to GFI outlets. Where you put the wires is important. Make a note about where the wires go on the old outlet. The terminals might be labeled input or line, for the power input. The output might be labeled output or load. These wires have to go in the same positions on the new GFI outlet.

Power has to come in at the input terminals, The black wire goes to the side with the Brass colored screw, the white wire goes to the side with the silver colored screw. The ground wire goes to the green screw.

The GFI not only protects the outlet where it is, but if other outlets are connected to the output terminals it will also protect them. The output side feeds the rest of the outlets that are on that circuit. So if other outlets in your coach do not work it can be that the GFI outlet that feeds them is tripped. Same deal, black to brass, white to silver. ground to green. Sometimes they will connect the 2 ground wires inside the box and only one ground wire will go to the GFI

So you could very easy have 6 wires. 3 in, 3 out. There will be 5 wires if they have connected 2 ground wires together before it goes to the GFI This is the most common way to do it.
There are many videos on youtube about how it is to be done. If you have any questions. Just do a search on how to GFI
