Help a blind man find his fuel filters on ISL400

I must be blind to miss something as obvious as a fuel filter. The Fuel/Water Separator filter is right there, but a secondary filter (FF5488) is MIA. Looking under the engine just shows the oil filter.

What am I missing here?

Thanks, John. I was under the engine and saw nothing, so if it's possible that there's only one, that would make sense. However, wouldn't the Spartan guy know that?

Anyway, maybe the question should be: Could there be only One fuel filter for an ISL400?

Here is a previous thread that says there is a second one on the 400. Cheers

On my 370 ISL the filter is on the passenger side above the starter.
I can’t see it from under the engine and can only see it from above if I climb up on the engine.
Good luck I have a couple new scars on my bald head from changing it🥴

[mod edit] I have 2 filters for my ISL 400 one is on the passenger side by the motor and the other is several feet away on the drivers side by the AC condenser Hyd pump, and air dryer compartment., I believe it varies more by the coach maker than anything else...Doug

I'll open the top access panel again and look again. The filter (FF5488) is about 3"x8", so ought to be easy to see (if one is there)

Some models in 2003-2004 had only one filter - both Cummins and Cat permitted that for about two years, then went back to two filters (primary w/water separator plus a secondary). I suggest you call your chassis manufacturer (have the VIN handy) and ask if you have one or two. My 2004 American Coach with a late 2003 Freightliner XCM chassis & ISL 400 had only one.

My 2001 ISL 400 has 1 filter. Cummins told me that if there is a sensor plug on the bottom of the separator filter, then there is one filter.

But call Cummins with your engine serial number to be sure.

Cummins doesn't supply the fuel system - the chassis builder does that so is the one who actually knows what filters there are and how many. However, the chassis builder has to conform to Cummins installation specs to have warranty coverage, so Cummins can tell you how many filters they required for a particular engine model & year. You probably need the engine model (ISB, ISL, etc) and Engine Serial number (ESN) to ask Cummins about it.

I need to amend and broaden my earlier statement. My [unofficial] info source says Cummins and Cat both allowed single fuel filter installations on engines produced between Jan, 2000 thru December 2003, so coaches with model years 2000 thru mid 2004 typically have only one filter. The time span is a bit vague, since motorhomes often use a chassis that has been sitting at the factory. In my own case, my chassis was a January 2004 build but the engine installed was a 2003 Cummins ISL, so only one fuel filter was used.

Our 06 ISL had the filters under a separate cover in the back battery compartment.

UPDATE: Mystery solved, there is only one filter (as several of you have said). Odd that Spartan parts dept didn't know that, but the Spartan CS guy did.

Anybody want a FF5488 filter for cost of shipping?
