I have hail damage, now what?

Had golf ball and baseball size hail hit the other day and not sure at this point what to do.

First, Im not sure what type roof it is, it's not fiberglass, looks like some type of ruff texture rubber that is fairly stiff. It's on a 2008 Discovery 40x. Was told by a neighbor he thought it was a rubber rolled out over plywood but wasn't sure.

Ins, adjuster took pics of the dents in the roof and I'm waiting their reply. All slide toppers need replaced, MaxAir cover needs replaced, and a few dents in bay doors but I'm not sure what to accept on the roof.

My questions

Does anyone know what the roof is made of on 2008 Discovery?

Should I have it replaced if ins willing to pay for it?

Ins has a clause that they up charge for improvements above deductible so possibly my expense could be quite large so do I replace in that case?

Thanks!

Good afternoon guys, sorry to hear about the hail damage. Where were you that this got you? According to the brochure for your coach:

http://www.discoveryowners.com/2008_di_b.pdf page 18 your coach roof is a Royal Tuff Ply. As for should I replace it, I would get it inspected someplace the manufacturer recommends to see if any permanent damage has been done. Insurance should cover it if you have full coverage.

I think this is the manufacture of the roof.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks Pete! I had to read that page several times before I saw it. Waiting to see what ins will do now.

I cheated. I used the "FIND" feature in Chrome and typed in "roof". Seven occurrences were found in the brochure! I only had to look at those 7 to find the right one otherwise I would have missed it.

Good Luck!

Royal Tuff is a brand name for a TPO product. It is a rubber coating on a fabric backing. I prefer to use EPDM. I replaced the TPO on our 5er with EPDM. IMO it is a quieter, warmer product.

Will insurance cover the full cost of replacing a roof that is already 7 years old ? I wonder about that as our coach is much older and I wonder how they would handle it

The 64 Dollor question!
Waiting to hear back from ins.

If my share is too much I may have to ride with the dimple roof.

If the roof itself is damaged I would expect them to do nothing less than replace it.

I hope there is no policy small print that works against you, good luck with it.

You know golf balls have dimples for a reason. They make the ball go farther and straighter. Think the dimpled roof could be the same?

Did you know hail is referred to as diamonds from the sky in insurance circles? It's because the adjusters know a lot of adjusting work is going to be coming their way soon. Many adjusters are part time outside contractors hired during these times of a lot of claims.

Funny, they took pictures of tires and engine, I guess to prove it was drivable!

TPO is Thermoplastic Polyolefin and is not rubber. EPDM is rubber, you can replace one with the other, but with TPO you get no black streaks. Do a Google search and read the pros and cons of both.

I had hail damage on my toad. Hoped to see improved mileage. Never did.

It did develop a bit of a slice, though!

Take care,
Stu

P.S. Paintless dent repair was the fix. Fascinating to watch the guy fix hundreds of dimples ($9,300 worth of insurance claim): Learning | Training Paintless Dent Repair-Removal - Video Dailymotion

Where are you? I'm in Terrell, TX (E of Dallas) with a 2008 Discovery 40X. Hail on 4/16 damaged the slide toppers and possibly the roof (I don't do wet roofs). I notified my insurance that I'm taking it in for inspection this next week--they gave me a claim number.

I know from previous experience they will deal directly with my repair shop. It amazed me they didn't send their own inspector out on my last claim, just accepted his pictures and quote (that I thought was rather high). (When I was with AAA Insurance they did sent out an inspector to my repair shop and approved everything on the spot.)

I suspect you will be treated quite well. If damaged, they should pay for repair or replacement as needed. I’ve actually had quite good experiences with insurance companies over many years.

My current insurance is with National Interstate. Who do you use?
