I purchased a used 2007 Discovery 40x and the satellite reciever was taken out. Can I install Dish or Direct recievers to the system in the MH without a site visit from either company ? I have a new VIP 222 Dish reciever that someone gave me.

Which brand and model of dome do you have on your coach?

Sure you can. However you will need a HD dish and be able to aim it. You will need to get the azimuth (compass bearing), elevation (how high in the sky) and skew. Dish receivers are tillted to the side to get transmission from a couple of satellites. The key is to first have the dish mount level and true if you plan to use a tripod type mount. A signal meter helps too.

If you Google your receiver model there will be a bunch of info on aiming the dish. Here is one forum thread about it Setting up a VIP222 receiver and a 1000.4 ? - High Def Forum - Your High Definition Community & High Definition Resource Good luck!

EDIT: I was assuming no dome. If your rig has one then yes, the model of that will help.

Just give Dish a call and they will activate the receiver over the air and walk you through how to set it up. You may need to hook it up to the satellite and "find" the 110/119 bird. Then dish network can see the reliever and activate it.
Not sure, as you did not mention what "kind" of satellite dish you have the 07 Discovery, but if a fixed roof dish on a newer RV should be able to work HD. My Kingdome will do HD but only has 1 LNB...so when you "switch" channels between stations my Kingdome will rotate to the new satellite with a slight delay in reception. I also have Dish Network at home and an "extra" receiver in the RV. You will pay for ever receiver activated on your account. The extra "fee" associated to my RV receiver is $5/7 month on my account.

The KVH R4 is very similar to the R5, R4 is a stationary automatic and R5 is an in-motion automatic. The SL version of each is a 'slim-line' lower profile dome. You can update your 'firmware' in your dome to get it up to date by following instructions in this thread:
KVH Tracvision - updating firmware L3, R5sl

Use the same Flash Wizard program to 'install' the appropriate Dish Sats (110-119) using the SatInstall command. Let us know if you have any difficulties.

It probably came with direct tv mine did. If so sat. dome will have to be reprogramed for dish. It would be good if you could borrow someones receiver to make sure it works.

Hello Skido2,

I am going throught the same adventure you are.
I have a KVH R4SL and will want to install a 211K HD receiver.
I am told; it will take DishNetwork a n/c trip to my home where the RV must be located. I will receive a free tripod and portable 3LNB dish and cable plus the 211k receiver.
They will also configure the 211 to the KVH Sat.
The bad news is you and I must install a KVH Kit #S72-0308 (power and ground kit) that I have been shipped and a KVH mobile dealer must install the kit and software to obtain reception and HD. That will cost me $100/hr and an estimate of $160 to complete.
Let us know how you fare,

I have a Tracvision R4SL too. It has to be configured for either Dish or Direct, so that it knows what satellite to seek. There is a gadget called a Service Key that plugs into the controller switch to tell it to find the Dish bird rather than Direct (the default). You need to figure out if your R4SL is currently configured for Dish or Direct, so you will know if a change is required. Hopefully the Service Keys A & B are somewhere in the coach if not already installed in the switch. If not, a KVH dealer can get one or both for you.

You can download the R4SL Installation Guide here - it explains the set-up.

Let us know how you fare,
We just purchased a 2012 Discovery with a KVH R5SL satellite antenna, and we converted our system to Dish from Direct TV.

The only conversion required - in our case - was to install both of the A and B "keys" to convert to Dish. If you have those keys, the "A" key is inserted on the KVH panel into the DB9 port, and the "B" key is inserted behind the panel (it looks like a telephone jack).

Once done, our system received Dish TV without a problem. Here's a link on how to update the KVH system by yourself, not requiring a technician:

KVH Tracvision - updating firmware L3, R5sl

No configurations was necessary on our Dish 211K receiver. It worked as is from the factory.

Hope that helps!

We had a 07 Discovery with a R5, it had to be manufactured after a certain date in 06 in order for the HD upgrade to work, ours was so I updated it with the KVH software tool, plugged in the 211 Dish receiver and it worked great. We had Bell Expressvu before, changing it over is a little tricky but if you follow the video on the KVH site, it wasn't that hard. I will say the KVH website is excellent for all the information. We have a new American Coach Rev with a R5SL and I need to set it up with our dish receivers. I purchased a second one for our bedroom. I did not use the keys, I have them now but I am not sure if when you upgrade the software using the port, do you still need to use the keys? Has anyone set up a brand new one? Did you use the keys and the software?

About the keys, there is conflicting information on the KVH site and manuals. I know you need to remove the key(s) to do a 'check switch'. I use Bell and my 6141 is incompatible so I'm getting a newer 6131 and will be able to tell if keys are required when it comes in... How did you go from Bell to Dish, did you have to provide a US address? How do you handle payment from a Cdn. address? (PM if you want...)

Can you: Well.. yes.. You can.. HOWEVER they may not let you.

Suggestion.. Visit the store.. Camping world "sells" DISH for my RV, Best Buy, Fry's and many others "sell" both Dish and DirecTV.. You will note "Sell" is in quotes because nobody sells you the receiver saved for old non hd ones on E-bay or the like.

You may be able to hook those up and get Dish or Direct to activate,, I don't know.

But usually they want an installer to call upon you.

IF that happens. Drive to the installer's store and .. Get it done right there in his lot.

This is why I had my KVH R5 dome removed and replaced it with a Winegard Travell'er. No more worries about software/firmware updates or the constant changing between Sats as I changed the channels. Also the factory installed Sat coax from dome to the rear TV but if two people watched front and rear each would be competing for the dome. Now two tV's with independent receivers just like a home. Life is good once again...
