Insurance story

I decided to file an insurance claim to get a scrape fixed on the right rear of my Fleetwood Bounder. I contacted my insurance company (well known, large company) and they suggested a repair company in Dallas. The repair company prepared an estimate after some confusion about whether I wanted an estimate or was ready to authorize a repair. The estimation process took over 4 weeks after they reviewed the damage and took many pictures.

I was shocked to see an estimate of $18,000 and by that time was unimpressed with the repair company. If they took a month for an estimate how long would the repair take? My insurance company and the repair shop finalized an estimate of $17,000. I contacted my agent and she agreed that I could get additional estimates, if I wanted.

My next surprise. I received a letter from my insurance company saying they sent a check to the $17,000 repair shop (less my deductible) and they will be contacting me about the repair! I emailed and called my agent was told that if I wanted another estimate they could stop payment on the check.

At this point I was wondering why an insurance company would NOT promote getting additional estimates to possibly save them money.

This week, I received an estimate from a 2nd reputable repair shop of $4,500. Can someone help me figure out what is going on here?

Thanks,
Dave

Did your agent recommend the original body shop? or was it the claims rep?

Sounds like your insurance company is trying to please you.

Who knows if the 4,500 dollar repair will be better or worse than the 18k repair.

Are your rates going to go up?

Sounds like an insurance scam and your agent/adjuster are in on it.

Claims rep. I don't really have a agent.

Insurance story

Generally they will send check to repair place and you sign it when done. Do not sign check until you are completely satisfied or your done and out of gas. That big of difference in the estimates, something is definitely wrong. When I had mine repaired I rejected it 3 times and they had it for 3 months and it's still has to go back.

Believe it or not, the difference between touching up the paint and re-painting might well explain the huge difference in the estimates. You need to review the two in detail, or have one or both of the two shops explain how their estimate differs from the other. Nothing wrong with sharing the estimates with them.

Well, here's an update. The 2nd ($4,500) repair shop contacted National General and they were told that the check to Coach Specialists had already been cashed. My MH is still sitting in my storage area.
Additionally, I received my policy renewal with a 60% increase in premiums.
I not happy with Good Sam's and National General and will be voicing my dissatisfaction to the Texas Insurance Board and anywhere else I can.

We had National General till last March. In Sept '15 I had my first chargeable accident since HS and I'll be 70 in Jan. Late wife complained of neck pain so NG opened a claim, this changed Medicare to secondary and NG to primary as per law. Problem is we were never informed of the change by either NG nor Medicare. We switched to Hartford in March and NG NEVER released the claim with Medicare. I didn't find out about it till a few days after my DW passed. Have spent weeks trying to resolve it since Medicare is going back and refiguring all the claims since the first of the year and taking money back from the providers who are now billing me for the difference.
Hopefully I've finally got it taken care of as of this week!
