K&N ETAL filters,

Hj all,
was wondering if the air intake systems and filters are worth the extra money ? Could use a little extra boost accelerating and was wondering if the hype was just that. Any other suggestions?

I had an 89 PA with the 454 engine and use to run I81 to Nashville. When I hit the mountains a kid on a bike could pass me. I had the BANKS system installed and the difference was amazing. Even my wife noticed the increase in power from the passengers seat. I would recommend it.

I've installed the full Gibson exhaust and the Banks CAI. I've noticed an increase in performance along with a minor improvement in mileage. The transmission now doesn't need to downshift like it did before on the inclines.

I have read a lot of "Stuff" on the K&N filters.. Used on on my towed.

Labs report that the K&N lets more "junk" into the engine (larger particles) than a common paper filter.. I can not argue with these labs as they seem to be doing the test properly and now what they are doing.. HOWEVER.

My brother runs Dirt bikes (or did don't know if he still does) These bikers often use K&N filters and the environment, Dust and Dirt and Grit wise, is about all you could ask for in a testing ground.

They tear the engines down often and he says he has NEVER seen, on either his bike or any of his buddies, any evidence of scoring of the cylinder walls due to grit getting past the K&N filter... I'm inclined to believe him

I ran a K&N on my towed for about 100,000 miles, One time I took it off for cleaning (2006 after a trip out west) and it was so full of grit that the stuff fell off even without it being tapped.. I cleaned it and re-oiled it (And cleaned out the housing as well) and when the car finally died (Due mostly to things OUTSIDE the engine block) There was NO and I mean ZERO evidence of oil burning which is a sign of scored cylinder walls.

I do feel I picked up a couple of HP, perhaps a bit of MPG but back when I towed with that car it was clearly more responsive after the K&N was installed.
