Looking to Buy
I have been looking at a 2002 Discovery 38P that is in excellent shape with 2 slides, Cat 330/Allison and clean as a whistle. Mileage is 50K and price is $55K.
Good glass, tires are only 2 years old, batteries a year old and no concerns with roof or anything else I could find.
My question is: is this price in the correct range?
I appreciate all feedback to help me with this decision.
Thanks,Jim

The NADA RV price guide is a good place to start: 2002 Discovery by Fleetwood M-38P(330HP) - 39' Standard Equipment, Prices & Specs - NADAguides
You can see from this that average retail for the unit is ~$52k so the asking price is reasonable. NADA is only a guide and prices can go much lower and much higher depending on condition and options. With respect to options, do not add in any items that were standard equipment. So you should add the satellite dish (if it has one) but not the standard TV antenna.

Jim,
That price doesn't sound out of line for a 2002 D. To figure it's value, I think you need to determine how many options above standard items were installed on the unit. Could be several thousand dollars difference in its value. See if you can obtain the original purchase order. If, not, or if you can't obtain the 2002 brochure, I might be able to get it for you.

Trying to find the spec sheet on line showing the standard items that came with the unit but not finding it.
The only brochure I found was not a lot of help.

I to have an 02' discovery. I paid lots less but mine was not in premo shape as yours is. Last year when I purchased mine the 38p was about 69K$ on NADA. 50k miles is just broke in and do you have any maintenance records? Again, nice coach

Try and go to RV-online. Then type in "Discovery" in the Quick search.
Here you have some MH similar to the one you are looking at. Please note that asking price and selling price may be 2 different things. I am not saying that they are, but that the could be.
Good luck hunting

Well, in real estate the old saying is Location, Location, location, I believe in RV's it's Condition, Condition and Condition
It sounds like this one is really good, two year old tires is a plus on a unit of this age as a new set would run from 1400 to 4000 depending on the brand.
The other thing that makes it worth more is the season, this is camping/rving season. If you bought it in November or December, you could expect a little break in the price.
Is that the bottom line price, have you made an offer lower than the asking price, if you go to your bank and give them the particulars, and maybe get pre-approved you could make an offer of 52K and see what they would do, knowing that if you had to you could go to 55.
Anyhoo, just my thoughts.
Good Luck and Happy Trails
Jim

Appreciate the input from all.
Chaffee KId- actually have it down to $53 at this point and still working. Really nice people who have meticuously maintained the unit and added many plus's.
I am looking at getting a complete inspection on it including mechanics and appliances which I understand is required in order to get an extended warranty in place. Spoke to Xtraride and got that info.
I'll keep all posted.

Hey Jim, don't know how much of a mechanic you are, but I'm not a big fan of extended warranty. If you just bank the money you would spend into a maintenance account, you could probably pay for any repairs you would need.
Normal service on that unit would give you years of trouble free travels. Course, its your decision. I recently bought a 2011 Dodge Ram (new) and they wanted me to buy an extended warranty. The new warranty covers it for 36 months and the drive train is covered for 5 years or 100,000 miles. I turned it down.
I have read many stories in MotorHome and other magazines of owners having bought extended warranties only to have their claims denied for one reason or another. Then when the magazine gets involved, suddenly they "rethink" their decision and pay the claim. So bear that in mind if you ever have to make a claim.
Also examine the small print closely to see what is covered and what is not, are lift pumps covered, is the fuel pump covered, engine accessories?
Just some thoughts from another "Show Me"
Happy trails
Jim
