Hopefully it is just a loose ignition switch. The rod snap fits into a hole in the switch which is very very tight on a new switch. As I said before, the plastic block inside the switch broke in half on my Lumina (at the rod hole). Your issue may be just a loose switch as Goldwinger mentioned or a failing switch. On my Lumina there was no room to access the switch without removing the bolts securing the Steering Column and dropping it down for access. Even then it was hard to access.

Rod inserts into a hole located in the slot on the left side of this picture. Unfortunantly, it is under the switch when it is mounted on the steering column.
