I have been looking at Brochures on a 38 N 2005 Bounder diesel. If anyone can answer a question for me I would appreciate it.
How does one service the Diesel generator? I know it is mounted in the front but was wondering if it is mounted on a slide?
I never owned a diesel before and have been thinking of upgrading to a DP
Thanks; Don

Hi Don,
I don't own a Bounder, but I feel quite confident in saying that the generator in the DP will be mounted on a slide which will be either air-powered or manual.

I have a 1994 Pace Arrow Diesel with a Onan 7.5KW Diesel genset center front. No slide and only a drop down "hood" access in front. Can check and add oil, coolant and air filter from the front but changing oil and filter means using the creeper and getting underneath. Not a big deal but a genset that slides out would be sweet...

Good question, as a lot of DPs don't have sldes on the genset -it apparently has to do with the front end design. However, Bounder diesels for the past few years have had the genset on a slide. While you're lookin at your brochures, look at the front end shot of the coach. That cutout section dead center in the front is the slide.

We had an '04 Bounder diesel and the generator was not on a slide.

I could be wrong , what is that cutout in the front panel? I'm just going by looking at them, I've never taken it apart.

Steve,
That is an access panel to get to the generator, just like on our LE. But the generator itself does not slide out, at least it didn't on our '04

Okay - mystery solved. An access panel is good - I,ve owned 4 motorhomes, I have never had to remove the genset anyway.

I have the "access" panel in front of the MH. It doesn't appear to offer any access of a useful nature to the generator. My generator does not slide out as those on higher end coaches do. The oil filter access is from underneath the generator.

That is the way it is on mine. The "hood" opens up so you can get to the breaker to turn it off if you want to run your generator while you are plugged into shore power if you want to. if it is a diesel generator it is not a bad idea to start it up at let run for a few minutes. With these new generators you can run them while plugged into shore power. That's what we were told when we picked up our rig. I haven't tried doing that nor do I intend to try it. w4phj is correct. I was also told that I can use the same oil in the generator that I use in my motorhome.
Petro, notice my sig. We love this rig. We got ours in January. We have only been out 2 times, but so far no problems.

Jerry, the breakers are there for the same reason that they're installed on anything - to protect from overload. While whoever told you about running the genset for a couple of minutes might have had the best of intentions, that advice will do more harm than good. Onan advises that you run the genset at least 2 hours per month at a 50% load. Running it with the breakers off (no load) does nothing to exercise the unit.
Enjoy your new rig!
