'03 Southwind; how do I pull out the Weldex backup monitor? It sometimes goes grey (and getting more and more frequent) and I want to yank the monitor for testing, but I'm not sure what keeps it in there.

SAMCUDNEY,

If your camera hangs from the overhead front center cabinet and looks like this:
http://www.weldex.com/products.php?mm0=5&mm1=0&sm0=$&sm1=&sm2=&showProdu ct=WDRV-3007M

Unscrew both sides of camera and disconnect harness from rear of camera.

Steve

Nope, it's embedded in the dash, with no visible attachments. I haven't been able to get a good look up there, I'm guessing it's held in with a screw on each side or something similar, but I'm hoping somebody knows for sure. It takes a contortionist to get at things under the dash.

WhenI replaced mine in the dash it had a "U" bracket and two screws on each side to hold it in. I guess I was lucky, I had a removable cover on top of my dash that allow total access for easy removal. My B/W Weldex was doing the same thing and I would also get horizontal lines. The 7" Weldex B/W monitors were discontinued due to the solder joints on the control board failing, could not take the vibration of the road. I replaced mine with a Weldex LCD color system that uses the same cable and is a perfect fit for the dash opening. Tim at rvcams.com knows all about rear view camera systems, give him a call.

OK, great. that's what I thought/was afraid of. Miserable thing to get at, maybe pulling the radio will make it a little easier. I checked with rvcams, thanks; wow, he does know stuff! He suggested some diagnostics, but I suspect the final solution (sounds ominous) will be replacement surgery.

SAMCUDNEY did you ever get the monitor out. I need to get the IP cover off in order to put it back on the top lip of the dash. Need to remove the monitor and the radio in my 2004 Southwind 37C first. How did the monitor come out? Top of my IP cover is held in place by Velcro. Have seen other Southwinds with two screws on the top of IP to hold it in place. Not on my unit.

I removed the radio (relatively easy; aftermarket unit) then reached up behind and unplugged everything. The monitor was held on by two knurled screws on the left (driver's side) only, holding the monitor to a steel bracket screwed to a piece of wood reinforcing (ha!) the dash. Very cheesy. Also very difficult to access. The monitor came out through the hole in the dash, a very tight fit.

Miserable job.

I replaced it with a flat panel bought off of fleabay, screwed to a piece of plywood filling the hole where the Weldex was. Looks OK, actually. I had to do some finagling to make the cabling work right, patch the new ends on to the old cable, but it works great, color monitor with IR capabilities.

My 04 Southwind 32VS has the same problem with the 5.5" Weldex B/W monitor. I see you did the same as me the first time--remove the radio and go from there. Upon installation, I use only one nut on the driver's side that I can reach from under the dash (while laying on the doghouse).

But what I found the most difficult were the buttresses on the monitor housing where the knurl nuts screw in. The fiberglass/plastic dash hole for the monitor was so tight, these mounting buttresses was what were hanging up trying to slide the unit out.

I used a light rasp and cleaned up the dash hole a bit, then used a file to reduce the buttresses down smooth on the monitor housing.

Using only one knurl nut and the tight mounting hole keeps the monitor in plenty tight. Now, it's just a matter of eliminating power/ground/camera/connection possibilities before I seek a replacement monitor.

Good luck

Walt
