What is this compartment made for?

This narrow vertical compartment is right behind the rear wheels on the passenger-side of my expedition.
I'm sure it was made for something but not sure what, any ideas?

Can't tell from the pictures , would a collapsed sling chair fit?
I doubt the manufacturer had anything in particular in mind , just to provide access to the space.

Anything you can fit in there, electric cords and/or hoses look like likely candidates.

Storage space is always at a premium in our RVs. This is just an example of not wasting any.
