How much markup do Dealers put on used MHs?

I see a couple of used Foretravels on Dealer sites (like Motorhomes of Texas, or La Mesa RV). How much markup do these dealers put on the used MHs?

I've read that on a new purchase, one could expect to knock off 30% on the sticker price. What about a used MH?

Should I expect to knock off 10% on the listed price on a used MH?

If you're a serious buyer, start at 30% off listed price. They can only laugh, kick you out, or counter-offer. If you're serious, they won't do the first two options.

Look online for other similar models listed for sale and use that to make an educated first offer.

Armed with your appraisal in hand, its a salesmans worse nightmare. Good luck.

A friend of ours sells used MH's at a local dealership. He told me the margin on used coaches is more than on new ones.


That being said, every deal is different. Dealerships will often cut a deal to get rid of a coach that has been sitting there a long time.

I think they buy it from a person using a super low wholesale book, then clean it and fix obvious defects, then add 40%. The dealer gets 20% period.the salesman gets the other 20% or whatever he is willing to take.

Also do not forget some may be on consignment.

Don't pass up some of the coaches at Foretravel where they were built. They have some very nice older coaches too and they are fairly priced. Again go armed with information.

Used cars are higher margins for car dealers than new cars. Same for RV I am sure.

But then again.. Foretravels as well as Prevost & Newells are a cut above other coach manufactures..therefore You will pay a good price based on the superior quality of the coach.
As a "for instance", we bought our coach wholesale and now have $130k invested with a bit more to go.... but the coach was appraised at $156k retail 2 months ago..... not too shabby for a 15 year old 40 footer with tag.

PPL takes 10% of the sale price. They are a consignment lot. At least that is what they told me. When i made an offer on a coach, they had to call the owner.

One thing to keep in mind if you are serious about a Foretravel purchase.
In Nacogdoces all 3 dealers/used lots (Foretravel, Motorhomes of Tx, and Old Town Motorcoach) plus Extreme Paint and Graphic's(for repaint and body work)
Most of the personnel in the shop(s) are current or former Foretravel employees. So they are well versed in the brand and know all the little tidbits to keep everything fixed without having to guess or jury rig.
When I had our coach @ Extreme to repair the damage CampingWorld did to our roof... The guy that did the repairs was the same guy that did the fiberglass & paint when it was built...KNEW his stuff.

We looked at a few Foretravels. Be sure to check the bulkheads for jacking.
We looked at a 02 that had a zipper looking crack from top to bottom were the rear cap met the sidewall. From what I herd is that they tried some new way of attaching the cap to the sidewall. Also had a fella that lives near MOT look at a couple for me and two had delam under the slide out window.
Never found one with a seperate potty room and that's a deal breaker for me.
Most have solid front axels. Love the model with the U shaped galley kitchen.

Yup those things are a known, Ours had the front and rear caps repaired under warranty, and we inspect the bulkheads every year,,They also can be repaired if needed with out breaking the bank.
As for the separate potty room, We went with the pass thru bath as it is laid out for handicapped access & usage. same reason we stayed with a single living room slide...more room when closed up and when traveling...
I have no issues with the Foretravel designed front axle, that said the newest ones with the independent suspension does give you a better(sharper) wheel cut angles for maneuverability..
The "outboard airbags" are a truly stable Air ride system..
