Still waiting

Our deer smack damage has been repaired at FOT. They did a marvelous job of matching everything. The front end looks great. We had an engine light come on while limping to Nacogdoches. A quick stop at Cummins in OKC left us listening to the screaming yellow engine light down to Nac. "Keep going As long as the light stays yellow" was their advice.
Mind you this was very early October. FOT utilized the diagnostic printout provided by the Cummins guy in OKC. No luck. Meanwhile I searched the Forums looking for a Cummins person in Nacogdoches. Found Bernd, who comes with excellent commendations from all who have had work performed by him. Coach has been transferred to Bernd's shop. He has spent about 6 weeks wrangling with both Cummins and Good Sam extended service plan folks to get our engine fixed. To me, that is above and beyond customer service. We,or should I say He is finally getting to move forward in the process. Apparently the required inspectors have showed up and have blessed the coach. I am waiting anxiously to find out all the details as to why the engine is having to be rebuilt. There will be an update in the future. So we remain grounded, missing spring rally and a guided motorcade trip. Least we were able to cancel early enough so that our spots might be filled by someone else.

Isn't it fun waiting for damage or engine repairs? Kind of like a root canal!

My ISX dropped a valve in #6 when we were 40 miles from home. Ferried the late wife and cats home then went back and stayed with the MH for 3 days till the wrecker got there. 5 weeks and $22,000 we had it back from the Cummins shop. Then I had to repair the damage that the shop did so another $500 even though I did the broken interior door myself.

Spoke with Bernd. Our ISX12-500HP ,If I understand him correctly had a sleeve slipped in the #6 cylinder. This in turn started a slow but steady reaction with the other cylinder sleeves. With the slippage, the fluids started to intermingle ,thus causing the pressures to rise. The fan that we heard working overtime, was actually doing it's job trying to keep the engine cool.
Those folks who know Bernd, know his shop is up a hill going out of Nacogdoches. He said that he could hear the engine as it struggled to push the coach up the hill. He marveled at the fact that we even made it to Nacogdoches. The engine light remained on yellow for us and we didn't push her.
The head gasket , pistons, rods, sleeve have all been damaged. But the real show stopper is the bloody fan which has bearings that sound like castenets. It has to go to England for repair and has a 60 day minimum turn around. Hopefully it will return by mid June.
Bernd is a excellent mechanic, but more so a man who communicates. After his initial shock of no husband with me,Bernd spent about 90 minutes going over his findings and plans in detail so that I could relay the information to my husband, who stayed home due to being sick.
Thanks to the folks who recommended Bernd to us.

Linda,

Can you ask Bernd if what happened to your ISX12 is the same thing that happened to the ISX15 in the Phenix they worked on back in 2015)? We watched them pull the heads on that one while they did some chassis work on our 2003.

I have read of a "dropped valve" problem on the 600 and 650 hp pre-DEF ISXs (Mr. D is very familiar with it from his 2010 CC Magna) and have seen a number of reports of Phenix's with that engine failure, but had not heard of a problem with the 500 hp version.
