Generator problems

Any ideas? I have a 2003 GulfStream UltraLite Class C. When the generator starts & runs, the panel says we have a fully charged battery. Within a few minutes of shutting the generator off, there is no charge on the battery. Overnight even the frig goes off when it is running on gas. The coach battery was checked and it is good. The motor battery is new. Rarely will the generator start without first starting the motor. Sometimes they are both dead & we have to jump it. Any ideas??

I would suggest to check the system with a digital volt meter. The charge indicator is not very accurate for diagnosing a problem. When the battery is fully charged and rested you should have a reading of appx 12.7 volts. When the gen is running or you are plugged into 120V you should show appx .6 to 1.0 volt higher then battery voltage.
The coach battery may be new defective, so it also should be load tested. Also check/clean all battery cables and connections, including frame ground connections.
That's where I would start.

Anytime the coach is plugged into shore power or the generator is running, the monitor panel will show the batteries as being fully charged, even if they are not. This is because the converter/charger is producing enough voltage that the monitor thinks the batteries are charged. When you are not plugged into shore power or have the generator running the monitor panel will be much more accurate as to what the battery condition is.
