Generator starts and quits

My brother just bought a '98 Scenic Cruiser with a Generac 7.5 generator. It starts ok but quits when you let go of the start button. It will continue to run only while holding the start button or preheat button. I assume this has to do with the fuel valve.
Where do I start to fix it?
Is there a temporary fix for the weekend?

Be sure the oil level and type is correct; which I am sure you have already checked.
Is this a diesel or propane generator? It sounds like a diesel, since it has a preheat switch. If you will provide the model of the genset we should be able to come up with a service manual for it. There will not be a temporary fix.

the sons gen did same thing.starts then ouits.checked everthing oil was in safe range.filled up oil to top level an runs. sensor must be off but keep oil level to top an works good.

Is there enough fuel in the tank? Mine did that when I had 1/4 tank of fuel left, once I went down and topped off the tank it worked fine.
