Hello from Spain and Hurrah.

We received the OBD and used it to track down a primary/secondary failure on pot 10. Changed coil and went out for a test drive. ( trailer attached but no tow car) No misfire was felt. Next day set off . A minor misfire/judder was felt but we pushed on to get the engine temperature up before checking with the OBD again. No codes. Pushed on until Spain. Felt misfire/judder occasionally whilst travelling always below 2000 rpm. Nearly always up an incline. Checked again no codes. We have now done 600 miles since replacing the coil and the symptoms still seem to be there but we have no codes.
Now thoroughly confused. But we are very happy to now be in the sunshine. We have been given an all clear to continue a further 150 miles to our chosen destination in Spain by an RV mechanic based in the UK. We need to return to the UK at the end of March. Once again your brilliant thoughts and help would be greatly appreciated.

Hilary,

You will not always set a code when it misfires. If I were to guess it's this. Typically codes are not set unless the problem or error is sufficient to create an emission failure.

If your miss does not last long enough to cause the exhaust to exceed the emission standards it won't set the code. If aa code is set every time a slight glitch occurs the dealers would be covered up with vehicles trying to determine if there's a problem.

Several years ago if you failed to tighten the fuel cap codes were set and dealers were covered up. They changed things so it won't happen unless it's really messing up the emissions.

You folks have become seasoned diagnostic occassional technicians because you had to.

Travel Safe & ENJOY!!!!!

Sometimes, misfires are set by WATER in the fuel, and these will not set codes; water is strange, mixes well with alcohol, but if (more than) the alcohol can absorb, does phase separation, and MOVES around in the tank, so sucked into fuel system intermittently, and (maybe) only on hills. Years ago, syphoned a quart from uncles truck and 50% water; added HEET to tank and went from putt-click-putt-putt to purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr within 60 seconds. *** ONE OTHER THING you could try is changing the Plug on #10; buy one, change/ test, keep old for spare, esp. if it does not cure the miss.

Really do appreciate the replies.

TeJay, your comments about the codes are exactly the same as the UK engineers, it gives great comfort when you get the same comment from two people you trust.

We are looking to change both the air and fuel filters if we can get the parts over to Spain, just in case - if we can work out how to do them.

The general consensus seems to be carry on if it's not getting worse and not damaging the Cat.

We might be moving further south on Monday and then logging on will become much more difficult. If we don't post it's because we can't.

Now going to have quiet rest in the sunshine and enjoy our RV.

Thanks again.

Sorry we have been silent for so long

Hola everyone from Spain,

We are so sorry we have tried many times to post but have had WiFI problems. We are now on our way home. Still in Spain at the moment. We misfired into Spain, settled for 7 weeks. Checked for codes on arrival. No codes. Blew the coach solenoid, bridged it with jump leads. We our now returned to Vinoroz having travelled from Oliva with no or no detectable missfire. At present putting together a cable to replace the jump leads before moving into France. Buz is now booked in in England to be sorted out before our next travels. We will try to post along the way and will let you know when we are home. It is great to have your company.

Hils
