Question Tour Master - The Fan Under The Coach - What it is really?

Hello All...

2008 Tour Master T-40B

So I just picked up our coach from being de-winterized and on the way home I noticed that the fan that is under the coach, in the front, that is in front of something I thought was the A/C exchanger, was running when I had the heat on.

Now what I mean by ON, is that the dial that has the little icons for FEET/FRONT, FEET, FRONT/Defrost, and Defrost (OFF at the top) and then A/C items on the left. If it was in any heat position other that just FEET, the fan would come on. (Not sure why it would not come on for FEET only...but it did not.)

Now this is the fan UNDER the coach (Outside in front of the front axle) , not to be confused with the blower fan inside the dash which has it's own speed dial.

So, is this also part of the heater and the fan is needed for something? I thought it was the A/C coils as I had only heard the fan cycle on and off on and off, on and off when I used the A/C in the summer. This is the first time I have used the front heat really, this is why this may be a strange question as I would not have expected that fan to turn on.

NOTE...I am asking for one of the things that was replaced in service was the Thermo Switch. This was replaced as the front end A/C stopped working and I was told it was the switch and they replaced it.

So, I guess the question is...what is that unit under the coach with the fan? As it is a radiator type unit that seems to run with both the heat and the A/C. (Well, I can not test it with the A/C as it is still to cold here. But it is coming on with the heat. ???

(Boy I hope the above came out right. LOL)

Thank you.

David, first let me welcome you to iRV2.com and to the Gulf Stream Owners forum. I am sure you will enjoy the website. You will find we are a group of fun loving RVers that like to help each other where we can. If you have questions, just ask and try to give as much detail as possible.
The fan outside is the condenser fan. It is used to dissipate the heat off the condenser coil for the dash air conditioner. It should only be working when the compressor is running to keep the head pressure down to acceptable levels. This can happen in several selected modes. I know that most are designed to run the compressor in defrost, Bi-Level and air conditioning through the dash vents. When you had the repairs done, were you able to run the AC then and if so did you and did it cycle the condenser fan motor outside? I know that the "floor" should be straight heat with no need for the compressor to be used and therefore it could be operating properly. Watch for the compressor to cycle, on the various setting where the condenser fan runs.
Good luck, enjoy and keep us posted.

Good morning...

Thank you kindly for your reply.

So, I take it that in HEAT mode it will also come on and run. (In heat mode it seems to run full time vs in A/C mode it will cycle on and off.)

So I was right that is was A/C condenser, though I could not remember the name , but why would it run in HEAT mode? I know you mentioned that most are designed this way, but to me it seems very weird it would seeing the A/C is not running and it is an A/C part.

Like I mentioned, it was strange to me as I had not heard it before based on not using the heat until now. I have tested the heat (have had the coach 1 year now) but never really needed to use it.

I have the down side of the fan being quite loud to the point I can hear it even at highway speeds. It is a very high speed fan that makes quite a high pitch tone.

Thank you again.

This is by design. The Evans Tempcon control systems turn on the a/c compressor in all modes except vent, floor and, of course, off.
