Mark, yes, it should be a warranty repair or at least a "good will" coverage. Did get a contact point at Cummins and sent him an email asking how it could happen again in the same cyl. so soon. He's out of the office till today and probably trying to catch up with everything else now.
Just looked at the original repair order, seems the unit was put in service March 10 2009 so it's a year out of normal warranty coverage.

For what it's worth, I just dealt with a Cummins marine engine failure. It was a dropped valve caused by a spring failure. The failure report identified the spring which failed very early in it expected life cycle. It was pure and simple a defective spring. While our dealings were with the warranty company, I'm told they made a claim back against Cummins and got at least some help.

RE Possible over-revving while heading downhill. The EMS might cut off fuel but it can't prevent over speeding if one is over the RPM redline. Not saying this is happened but engine, exhaust and foot brakes are about the only way I know of to avoid over-taching. Put it in neutral???

The Allison TCM working with the Cummins ECM would prevent this. And if this happened in 6th gear, the Coach would of had to be in excess of 100 MPH.........WHEN TAC'ed OUT

Yep, quote is $28,879.32 even after applying a couple discounts like the Cummins club. Not happy with Cummins right now but we'll see what happens next I guess. They have admitted there's a problem in writing. Cummins NW has now seen four failures in the ISX like ours, two in class 8 trucks and two MH's (including ours).
Reading on the Internet shows a few problems but there aren't 650 ISX's in use in trucks as that's usually a MH only rating.

That is heartbreaking news. I am sure you will be pleading your case with the Cummins rep who sent you the email acknowledging they had an issue.
My local Cummins Coach Care shop had a fairly new American Heritage with the ISX that dropped a valve about 2,000 miles out of warranty. The shop was waiting to hear from Cummins but told me they expected Cummins to 'help' with the repair.
Does that quote only include repair of the one cylinder or a complete in frame rebuild of the engine?
I'm rooting for you and hoping to hear you get better news soon.

I for sure , hope Cummins steps up to the plate.........especially with the records on your engine, repair it till they get it right! or at least the right parts in it so it can have a long and healthy life like it should!

Sure sending good thoughts to a now fellow CC owner. I too hope Cummins 'Looks at the bigger picture on retaining all of it's current and ongoing future customers, and participates strongly in making this right.' And as mentioned, especially with the history of this being the second time for this engine having the same or similar problem.
Best, and go slow and let the process work out. Be 'positively assertive' when needed, but agree with letting Cummins suggest the first method of assistance.

Given that this is a failure of a Cummins repair they should pony up for the entire job IMHO. They may not have a systemic problem with this model engine but there is in this one.

I totally agree!
The issue, however, as I see it, is there is very little competition for Cummins now a days. It isn't that you have a choice of selecting a different engine make even when you order new! It would be nice if MH manufacturers provide some different engine options like Detroit, Mercedes, etc?

The fact that there aren't that many 650 ISX's, and four have failed at supposedly one Cummins shop (Cummins NW) is indicative of a high rate of failure - Another reason they should step up to the plate and do right!!
