650 Cummins a Problem?

Thinking of going from “trailer trash” back to a DP again. Not sure, but toying with the idea.

Saw a used (‘09) Magna 630 with the Cummins 650 engine.

I’m noticing some comments about problems with that engine.

What should I know ?

Thanks in advance.

Apart from reading all the comments from owners who have costly repairs and an unreliable engine. Its your call, you have the information. One member on this forum has had the problem twice with this very engine

I saw some comments on the 600. We had a 400 Cummins in our last DP and it was great. Of course the DP was only 38’ long too.

When I saw our 09 CC Affinity I was aware that the 650 ISX could be a problem. I did my homework, spoke with Cummins and was convinced there was a motor fix to ensure reliability. I received an estimate from Cummins, dropped my offer price by the cost of Cummins repairs and bought the coach. I then took the coach to Cummins and had the motor rebuilt ahead of using it. Since I picked it up (11000 Miles ago) I have had no issues and love driving it. Those CC are great Motor Coaches and I believe this will last us for years. The difference for me was I was not roadside broken down waiting for a tow and repair bill, i just met the possible problem head on.

Good luck with decision.

Very interesting (and forward thinking!). I wasn't aware that there was a factory recommended fix. Care to share what it was and at least a ball park price of what it cost?

Not only does this provide piece of mind, but eliminates all the additional costs that go along with a major breakdown (damage to other components, loss of highly-valued vacation time, working with unfamiliar vendors, being stranded, etc.)

I have an 09 CC and was one of those where the engine dropped a valve. That was in 2014, the engine had 49k miles on it and 5 years old. Overhaul at Cummins shop was $22,800. They covered half. That engine has been running strong since. Love it.

I am curious about this value reduction negotiating strategy. True, -offer 30k less to allow for engine rebuild. However, if you are financing the buy , the bank will not loan the 30k required to rebuild. So, getting a 30k price reduction based of future engine failure does not necessarily put 30k in your pocket to pay for the rebuild. So, am I missing something of is the purchase of the coach cash , in which case , yes the rebuild funds are immediately available???

I would believe purchasing with financing would require a different approach. If bought from a dealer I would make it part of the purchase conditions and they could rebuild it ahead of purchase/delivery.

Financing companies most likely would lend the lesser amount and then lend again for repairs I suspect? This should save interest cost until the monies are required.

.When my ISX failed after 2,200 miles I closed out one IRA and added a few thousand from the savings account. This was the second valve related failure and the third turbo replacement. Unfortunately I was told I would get the latest updated parts (at that time) but it didn't turn out that way so all I can do is hope it lasts till I can no longer drive the rig. But it sure is a strong running engine.
