Unhappy 8000 Onan generator

My generator runs at normal speeds then kicks into a very high speed and the only way to shut it down is to block off the air intake. anybody have this problem:

The Onan Quiet Diesel 8000 (Model HDKAK) that we have utilizes inverter technology. As load increases, the engine speeds up to generate more current. At maximum load, the generator runs at rated RPM which I believe is 3600. Decrease the load and it will slow down to about 1800 RPM. Try disconnecting load by shutting off the breaker on the front of the generator.

If yours isn't a Quiet Diesel, then never mind.

I just bought my 2008 Inspire and I think my generator speed can be controlled by the cruise control buttons on my steering wheel! Might be a correlation there?
