Carefree Entry Awning not working

The 2006 Country Coach I just got the entry awning has acorns inside the motor cover. Don't know if some wires are off but I need to just remove the cover to get to the nuts. I have the carefree online instructions and it said to drill 3 1/2" holes (why) all I want to do is remove that half shell cover. I would use a screwdriver but don't want to crack something, does it just snap on and off.
Thanks for any help on this.

If we have the same door awning there are screws on the bottom of the motor cover AND the top of the cover that have to come off the remove the outside half of the cover.

Mine has screws on the bottom of the cover, once removed the cover separates into top and bottom halves.

Thanks for the help but mine has no screws, I have a little giant ladder and looked it over real good and there is nothing. There is a small hole where I can see the nuts but no screws. It's hard to think that people can be as dumb as they are, I have removed about 75 of these nuts from the slide toppers and they had 2 books for dummies inside but never looked at them
