My generator temp gauge failed as well. I bought a replacement from the auto parts store. Easy job but you have to replace the sending unit (comes with the new gauge) on the generator as well. The sending unit is very easy to access and replace as it it right at the front of the genset.
To replace the gauge I found it easiest to remove the overhead panel and unplug the harness. That way you can lay it down and not put stress on the other wires. All of those gauges and wires have been cooking up there for over 25 years so some of the pieces will be brittle.
