Cleaning coolant sight glass

Have any of you fellow CC owners ever cleaned the long sight glass on your coolant recover tank? Mine has gunk in it and I am not sure it may not be stopped up since what liquid I can see in the glass is clear and what I can pull from the tank is dark pink. Also, the glass has a plug of goo floating on top of the liquid column.

Does anyone know how to open it?
