Mine have a phillips screw holding the bottom knob for the string, the instructions say to turn this screw thus loosing the tension on the string.
Never tryed it yet.

Do you have the metal bar that is attached to the window sill?

If so, you have to remove the screws holding that bar down. Underneath you will see the strings zig zagging back and forth with some springs attached. All you have to do is loosen the strings attached to the springs and take up a little slack and reattach to the springs. It doesn't take much to put a lot more tension on the strings.

I have the type where the cords pass thru a hole in the sill and then thru a button type thing on the bottom. The string is just tied with a large knot that keeps it from going thru. Less tension will make them very easy to operate and more just the opposite

On one of my shades the cord somehow broke the button and pulled thru.
Lucky for me the knot kept it from going up into the shade. I thought I would have to get it professionally repaired.

Place something under the shade to keep it open about 18" then untie the knot to give yourself as much cord as you can, being very careful not to let the cord go up into the shade. Then just use a screw with a metal washer on top or the bottom of the sill. Pull the cord down with a needle nose pliers to the correct tension and wrap it around the screw and tighten. On many of the sills the screw will have to be placed on the top due to the fact that the bottom is not accessible because of cabinets

Good Luck
