Don’t Trust Idiot Monitors!

This week is the weekend I dedicate each year to routine maintenance. This includes oil change, oil sampling, coolant testing, and air filter service.

The idiot monitor to which I refer is the air filter monitor in the rear side air intake compartment. I keep an eye on it and it didn’t show anything. However, when I pulled out my air filter it was caked with dirt and dust. I blew it out and after an hour of cleaning it is “almost” clean. I wish I had taken a picture of the amount of dust/dirt removed but didn’t think of it in time. Conservatively speaking I probably removed several pounds based on the before/after weight.

Oil change was uneventful. 6 gallons of Shell Rotella T 15W-40 and filter. During this change I installed a Fumuto drain valve. I’ve read of concerns about the valve opening or being damaged by road debris. The locking mechanism is very secure and road debris will take a lot of other crap out before it would even come close to the drain valve. Oil sample taken and will be mailed next week. Just under 14,000 miles on this oil.

Coolant sampling will be tomorrow.

My skid steer has a fumoto, from the factory, and I really like it. I can't imagine where road debris would open or damage the valve. I am thinking of installing one on our rv also.

Fumoto is having a sale on their stuff right now. I got an email yesterday about it.

The monitor may be shot but to get a true reading you need to get the pedal to the metal, up hill, to generate max boost.

If you not blowing out the soot, your not sucking in the air.

I put a Fumoto in a couple of years ago. Wish I had done it sooner. What a breeze to change the oil. I have a 5 gal container and use a short hose to feed the oil in. No mess at all.

Road debris????? It looks like the day I put it in. Clean and dry....
