Engine warning on dash

I have been towing with a 2000 36' Allure (Cummins 330 hp/8.3l). I get an occasional engine warning light that dissapears after between 3 and 10 minutes. Seems to happen more in hilly terain than flat but did happen once on flat with nothing in tow. Happens independant of hot or cool exterior air temperature. Has anyone experienced a similar problem and what did it turn out to be? Is this best serviced by a Cummins facility, Truck center or RV facility? Thanks for your input. Live the Dream!

Check your coolant level when the motor is cold and make sure you can see the coolant in the sight glass. A low coolant level will give you a check engine light.

Low coolant the first thing to check.
Any history on fuel filters ? Lift pump ? Is this a 24 Valve engine ? ( Sorry to ask , but I'm unsure of when the M/H industry went to the 24 V engine.) Cummins would be the shop to check things out , but other truck shops should be able to check for codes.
Intermitant codes in the system, may migrate out when the light goes out, ( the computer thinks the problem is fixed ) or be dropped when the key is turned off. So the best time for a scan would be , when the light is on, or after the light has been on but before the engine is turned off.
This may be an issue that you can't get a handle on unless you can scan the system on the road with your own laptop as it happens .

You have to remember that vehicles with computers have alot of sensors and any reading from any sensor that isn't normal will make the light come on. The only way to find out which one caused it to come on is a ODB reader that will give you a code to tell you. Something as simple as the oxygen sensor in you exhaust pipe can make it come on.

Sounds like you are referring to a gas motor, not a diesel. I have yet to find an O2 sensor in my exhaust.

My low coolant alarm would sound when I did a hard curve. It took me awhile to realize that it was the coolant sloshing away from the coolant level sensor.

As recommended above, check your coolant level in the surge tank.

I think the advice still holds. As I understand it, after 1996 all vehicles had to comply with OBD-II diagnostics. Some models have diagnostics beyond OBD-II that can't be pulled without special hardware, but the base codes should be there.

The fact that it's resetting is likely part of the retest procedure, however the code will be stored in memory and will be available for scan.

I know autozone scans codes for free... I have a code scanner at home.
