Fuel water separator not connected
I have a 1999 Affinity and noticed that the heater circuit at the bottom of the fuel water separator is not connected. The contacts in the disconnect plug are burned so the previous owner just unplugged it.
My question is how is this supposed to work and is it ok to leave it disconnected? I'm having trouble locating a replacement. The filter is a Fleetguard FS19551.

I believe the electrical connection is just to provide some heat so the water wont freeze and break the plastic housing. When running its warm enough but if left parked and water is collected and not drained it will prevent breakage .

I was not aware that there was a heater in there. Try the link below. It's a Cummins page and looking around I found a heater for the fuel filter can.
My '99 Allure is just the sensor no heater.

Good luck....

I don’t believe it’s a heater, it’s a sensor to indicate water is present.

Well, I talked to the tech at Country Coach and he confirmed that it is indeed a heater to aid start up in cold weather. When the temp is in the high 30’s or below (Fahrenheit) the ecm provides 12V to the heater for a few seconds to warm the fuel before it goes to the injectors. Racorstore.com sells the plastic cup with heater element. I’m going to do a test on the next cold morning to see if the ecm is indeed providing 12v and will report back if anyone is interested.

Road racer is this a Cat or Cummins engine? My Cummins only has two maybe 18ga wires to the plug that is on the bottom of the spin on filter. The one I saw on the Cummins web page was a can that had a sensor as well as a heater. You installed a filter element as this was not a spin on.

My Affinity has a Cat C12 engine. The filter in question is a Fleetguard FS19551 which is spin on and the cup with heater element spins on the bottom of the filter.

ARoadRacer, I have a 2002 Affinity that I bought this year, which also has the heated bowl. I am planning to replace the fuel filters soon and am curious if you were able to test the disconnected electrical wires and what you ultimately did when servicing your primary fuel filter.
My bowl looks original and I opened the drain to remove a few ounces of fuel in case it had any water in it. This was a bad idea, because now it seems to be leaking a drop or 2 per day. I'm thinking of getting a new bowl. Does anyone have any advice on staying with the heated bowl or just go with one that is not heated? The only heated bowls I found so far are from RACOR, and they are pricey ($200+).

Well, I never got around to testing the wires but haven’t had any issues. I think fuel quality is much higher now than it was in 1999 so I’m not worried about it.
