I'm Shocked
I have a 98 Intrigue, the original shocks are still on the coach. I was pricing shocks and would like to know why the Koni shocks are about 3 to 4 times as much as Gabriel. Can anyone shed some light on this. I just ordered the Gabriels, the front p/n is 83209 and the rear is 83122. Country Coach wanted $250 per shock plus shipping for the Koni brand.

On my previous MH which I purchased used with 24K miles. The OEM shocks were toast. Replaced with Bilsteins, great ride great improvement. After another 40 K miles changed to Koni's. Wow! An even better ride than the Billstein's.
Bought a DP, used a few months ago, it came with Bilstein's. Ride is good now with 47k miles.......when ride gets porpoise like, I will replace with Koni's.
Yep, they are expensive, but I got what I paid for.

And to answer your cost question it comes down to how much money the company spends testing and tuning a new design combined with how complex the internals are to get the ride handling. There is always a simple cheap way and a complex better way. You pick the method when you pick the price point.

I was talked into the Koni and after 25,000 miles, they were no better than the ones I took off. Road Kings ride and handle much better

I would like to piggyback on this conversation if I may. We purchased our first motorhome six months ago and I'm having a blast learning everything I can about our 1990 Country Coach Concept. As far as I can tell it drives great but I have no other frame of reference. I am wondering how to recognize when it's time to replace the shocks. I know what to look for on a car but not this Gillig bus chassis. The chassis has 115,000 miles on it and I'm confident the shocks are original. I replaced all six tires about 4,500 miles ago and don't see any wear issues.

I use the same criteria as for a car. They perform the same function.

I know that Road Kings are expensive, but I can tell you that they perform extremely well. My 02 Intrigue 36' already had them on when I purchased it. If they were to go bad tomorrow, I would put the same ones back on.
Several months ago my air ride height control arm went out going down the road. So I had no air in the bags up front at all. I was on a back country road and I had to go 30 to 40 miles before I could find a spot to pull over. The Road Kings handled the extra load very well, and I thought for sure that I would probably burn them up. That was 6k miles ago and no sign at all that the shocks had been affected. Considering how long shocks last I personally think they are worth it.
