Now if you had CA plates and license, might be a different story especially if your rig is obviously over 40'.

The officer probably had bigger fish to fry. Length and weight restrictions are for everyone on CA highways regardless of where they are registered. Drivers license is the only thing that is reciprocal.

Rumor has it CHP does a lot of rig length checking on the way to Glamis.

I suppose I will stay away from Glamis. I am 68' with just the F150 (6.5' bed) behind me.

Yep! If you're over-length stay FAR away from the Glamis Dunes Recreation area. I would not be caught anywhere within 150-200 miles of that section of southern CA.

I have lived and driven in and around the state of CA while being over-length at 72 feet and have never been stopped for a measurement. That doesn't mean that I will not get stopped sometime in the future but your chances of being stopped are far greater when your are around the Glamis Dunes Recreation area.

That area of southern CA is where the CHP like to hangout and write their months quota of tickets. RVer's are number one on their list for violations down there.

We snowbird near there and watch the long rigs go by on I8. And there are some really long rigs going by - gorgeous. I have watched CHP sitting on the overpass at Winterhaven watching the long rigs go by on the interstate without any reaction.

During Thanksgiving there are RV cities at both Glamis and Buttercup, they say numbering in the thousands. I suppose the safe option if you were going there would be to purchase an over length permit and not worry about the CHP.

I quickly looked at some of the rules and noticed anything over 80 feet has to have over length placards front and back.

Those CHP vehicles sitting in the overpass are "spotters" letting the CHP chasers know which vehicles they should stop and check.

Probably - IMO the ones going to Buttercup are probably OK as they pull off of the interstate right into the camping area. It is the ones who head north on the state highway up to Glamis that are the targets.

No such thing as a " over length " permit when you have a divisible load. Especially in Calif. where they have been known to make owner with long trailer have it hauled by wrecker rig, to the state line ! Not sure the current regs. On trailer length in Calif. however. Most states do not bother RV set ups as you are not required to stop at scales or Ports of entry.
