muffin fans in inverter/battery bay

Still poking around in this complicated beast we just acquired. Original owner said Xantrex inverter failed in 2011 and he replaced it with a Magnum Energy PSW unit. Good choice.

However, I found two muffin fans in the inverter area...one in a panel between the compartment wall and the tag wheel with a filter screen over it and another in the top of the compartment. Neither were running and it was warm, not hot, in the space. The cooling fan on the inverter was running.

Are the fans thermostatically controlled? If so, at what temp should I expect them to activate? I am concerned the cause of his earlier inverter failure may have been due to the fans not working.

I don't recall if CC installed cooling fans or not. I don't think they did so what you have is after market. Follow the wiring and you should be able to tell.

One thing to find out from the previous owner is if he had electric space heaters that he plugged into in the coach. I fried an inverter doing that. I don't think that they are wired to carry a sustained 500 -1500 watt load. I'm going to have to run a circuit that does not run though the inverter when plugged in. There's a whole thread on that somewhere on the class A forum. Good luck and enjoy your coach.

Not sure why an electric space heater would be needed with Aqua Hot. I would only use a space heater if I was on shore power. The inverter shuts down when on shore power.

I'm on my 4th Zantrex. I don't know why the first two failed. I suspect heat in the compartment. The 3rd one failed when the charger portion blew up. I only found one fan; the one between the compartment and the tag. It has a thermostat which I removed from the metal rail it was attached to and placed a plastic spacer in between. I found that road and tire heat was transferring to the metal rail causing the fan to activate and remain running long after I'd stopped for the day.

I had to replace a Xantrex in my previous coach. In my research on replacements, I found plenty of comments that Xantrex was not the company they used to be. Their quality and customer support had declined.

So I got a Magnum Energy inverter for that coach and this Allure also has a Magnum. From my experience with the folks at Magnum, they are top drawer. They answer the phone and you get to talk to their engineers who provide outstanding tech support.

Hope your Xantrex holds up but if you find you need another, consider Magnum Energy.
