Shore power question

I currently have both coach batteries removed to take to the shop and have the metal in my battery bay replaced due to rust and corrosion and have it hooked to shore power but there is no power to the coach. Do the batteries have to be installed and hooked up to have 110 power? I still have the chassis battery installed to start the engine but everything else is dead. Does the inverter switch have to be on? Thanks

Most of the power using appliances, lights, etc. in the motor home use 12v power. That means they run on batteries. The inverter converts 120v to 12v DC. I'm not 100% sure your 110v sockets will work, but try them.

I would think that your CONVERTER would still operate your 12v items, while plugged into Shore Power, even WITHOUT any batteries. Maybe your converter is turned off, it would only operate on 120v Shore Power, of course.

I would also think that your 120v outlets should work, regardless of batteries or not.

I can't answer your specific question, but I did this same thing on my 2000 allure last summer. I was warned by others about welding on the coach. There are a few items that must be disconnected before welding. My buddy and I ended up making a drop in replacement so we didn't have to weld on the coach.

Best of luck!

Many converters use the batteries as a reference for supplying current. I.e., no batteries no current.

If it has an inverter/charger it will not power up the 12 volts without a battery. They need about 5 volts just to turn on and a battery to regulate the output.

If it has a converter it will, that's what a converter does.

Don't let your inverter/charger run without a battery. That is why they typically don't have battery disconnect switchs on inverter/charger cables.

Now that's a great idea! do you happen to have the dimensions of the box that I could take to my welder? I am assuming you cut the old tray out with a saws all? probably save me some money also. Mine is a lot worse than yours was. Thanks

Guess I'll just be happy with no power until I can put the batteries back in. definitely do not want to mess anything up, have enough issues as it is.

Your lucky the inverter/charger didn't turn on, all of your red cables are laying on ground.

You need to tape up the + ends before starting the engine. Your alternator will get damaged if shorted thru the cross battery charging system.

Dave,

Let me look around and see if I can find the dimensions, I can't seem to remember where I put them. Yes we used a saws all and a grinder. We screwed in the new battery tray, it will probably out last the coach.

You can set your batteries on a bench temporarily and keep your 12V system active. I did this for 2 weeks while I was rebuilding my tray. I only used 2 of 8 of my new 6V batteries for this.

No all the loose cable ends have black duct tape on them, probably couldn't see it.
