Slide shear bolt break - head count!

Shear pins/bolt breakage, and where to get proper replacements, is a reoccurring post on many CC forums.

Made me wonder, how many have had breaks?

Please share:
Year =
Coach Model =
Length =
Number of slides =
Number of broken shear pins/bolts =

Specifically for us:
Year = 2004
Coach Model = Allure High Cascade
Length = 40'
Number of slides = 2
Number of broken shear pins/bolts = 0

Kind of lucky on the number of broken ones being 'zero'. As I've had some learning curves with the coach, that put sever strain on the large front driver slide. (117 outside in Reno, windows closed, both AC's running on high. Slide stopped a bit off angle when truing to open, maybe 1/3 of the way out! (Learned to open a window at all open/close of slides!). And on the rear slide, we broke a weld on a trip to Alaska, that caused the slide to be a little out of aligned when closed. (Did not know we had the broken weld, and used the slide for probably 4-5 weeks from when we thing the weld was probably broken. OMC found it, when I asked to see if anything needed to be adjusted.)

You would have thought that the extra strain from both of those - would have broken a pin/bolt.

And yes, I'm sure I jinxed this by writing this!!

TIA for sharing your info, and yeah - it's more for fun info, the anything meaningful...

Shear bolts/pins should always be the firs thing to break, that is their designed function. They prevent something more expensive from breaking first. Have the shear bolts/pins been replaced at any time? Some people mistakenly think using a harder bolt/pin will reduce having to replace a broken one, only to discover something expensive either breaks or wears excessively.
Our 5er slides used to break shear bolts. I always used cheap stove-bolts for replacements, carried a few extras in the 5er.

No broken bolts yet...had coach since April 2013. I bought a set of spares from Kevin Waite. Tech who did our delivery at Tom Johnson's cautioned me to always have a window open when deploying the slides and get off the switch for the Power Gear slide as soon as I see it fully in or out. Unlike the HWH hyraulic slides where HWH recommends holding the switch for a couple of seconds.

Are the references to open windows to relieve chances of strain due to air compression?

New to slides, never had them before, have three now.

Ours are OEM. Good point to check to be sure your coaches shear pins, will shear!

2010 Allegro Fred 35' QBA broke a shear pin turning out of a campground last fall involving rear passenger slide.My wife noticed our slide rolling out. Pulled off immediately, called Good Sam service and a mobile repair truck put a bolt in and we were on our way in 1.5 hrs.

I have 4 shear pins I got from Kevin. The other important thing is to check the 4 bolts on the DS front slide because they will work free from the stress on it when coming in.

Broke one pin in one slide in 10 years. Used a bolt/nut from my misc. parts bin; no issues.

Slide shear bolts.

Please share:
Year = 2005
Coach Model = Inspire
Length = 36'
Number of slides = 4
Number of broken shear bolts = 7 in the 4 years I have had it.

The first 4 were plain grade 8 standard bolts the previous owner installed.
I've since changed all of the bolts, even the correct ones, with new OEM
bolts, re-drilled the holes in the shafts and properly tightened them. Since then, I have only lost one on the small bedroom slide out. ????

Yep, a grade 8 bolt (grade 8 bolts are made to withstand end pull from tightening) will shear,--- and tear up more stuff in the process. What the OEM shear bolts consist of are grade 1 or 2, some use a standard shear pin.
