Smart Wheel Issues

I’m having trouble with my smart wheel. When I flashed my courtesy lights, the windshield wipers came on and I couldn’t turn them off. Plus, nothing else worked on the smart wheel including the horn. So, I pulled over and shut the ignition off and the wipers stopped and stayed off after turning the ignition back on. Continued driving and everything worked fine for a few miles until I hit the resume on cruise and then windshield wipers came on again and couldn’t be turned off with a dead smart wheel. I called the company and they advised it could be the clock spring which I then removed the top cover and didn’t see anything obvious. I tightened the center steering wheel nut and got a little more than an eighth of a turn and also cleaned the J1 connectors with some good electrical spray. One thing I’m not sure of is the clock spring. I couldn’t identify it with the center cover removed. There is a 4 wire connector in there with the wires routed down close to the center. Does anyone know what the clock spring looks like and where to get one, or even just the part number? I assume the whole steering wheel has to be removed? We’re in Anthem, AZ right now, right outside of Phoenix. Thanks for any insight.

I found a site that had the diagnostic info that you could download. Probably the SmartWheel site. Saved it to my laptop for future reference. Last week end I needed the Hi/Low on the wipers and found the switch did nothing. So I'll be digging into mine when it cools down and I have time.

The clockspring is under the steering wheel above the mutifunction switch. This "spring" has many wires in a flat ribbon type cable that is wound like an old fashioned clockspring. This allows continuos contact while the steering wheel is turned and just like bending a paper clip over and over again eventually the wires in the clock will break. Check with your chassis maker and make sure you have a clockspring as some smart wheels use a low powered transmitter and reciever.

Thanks for all the inputs. Had the clock spring changed in Phoenix at Massey Truck and RV Repair. All is good so far.
