I live in Texas, which has a special requirement based on weight, not length. If I remember correctly, I think 26,000 lbs is the cutoff. If your RV weighs more than that, you have to go to the DMV and get what they call a non-commercial Class B license. I got mine last fall, and it involved going to the DMV and taking a written test, then scheduling a driving test where I drove my RV around with an evaluator for about 30 minutes. I also had to back in a straight line and back from the middle of the street to the curb. Overall, it wasn't that difficult, but it's always a bit of a hassle dealing with the DMV.
I can't speak for other states, but that's what Texas requires.
