Sporatic water pump

My water pump seems to have issues, it works when it feels like not when I need it too. While on our adventure this weekend we stopped for a break I noticed the pump was not working so I uncovered it and looked for any thing that looked out of place every thing seemed ok. I turned the outside shower on trying to get a response from it to no avail. When we arrived at our destination I noticed water running from under my rig it was the outside shower I had forgot to turn off and the pump had decided to work. got the shower turned off but the pump wouldn't respond any more. After leaving it off for several hours it would work but only as long as you kept the water running when you shut off the flow it would quit. It did this all weekend never having water when I needed it. Any ideas I think it might be the controller but I don't know where it is located?

I'd make sure the strainer, usually located between the water tank and the pump is clear of any crud. I really think you need a new pump, the controller doesn't usually behave as you describe. If you pull the pump and test on the workbench, I think you'll find it still doesn't work properly.
