Steer axle Load Rating on 2008 Country Coach Magna

I currently have 315/70 22.5 Michelin XZA2's on my steering wheels, (same as drive wheels) with a load rating of 9090 pounds@130psi. (18,180 for the axle). The Accuride Al Wheels are 10,000 lb rated. I am confident that the rest of the axle / suspension bits will be fine with 20,000 lbs, but the tires seem the weak link. (since the the coach weight is closer to the 18k pound limit than I like.)

Michelin make a XZU S2 315/80 with a rating of 10,000lbs, but it is not on the RV recommended list. Toyo make a M320Z 315/80 with a 10k lb rating but it is like the XZU, an urban tire (still rated to 65 mph) but aimed at heavy front ends like garbage trucks.

Michelin have a 365/70 XZA 22.5 (same diameter as my tire) which is commonly found on the front end of Prevosts. It needs a 10.5" rim width as opposed to my 9".

Does anyone have experience with upsizing the load rating on the front end of a Country Coach 2008 Magna? Any experience with the more "heavy duty" non RV tires or know if the larger wheel tire combo from the Prevost will fit. On the latter point, I believe it will physically fit into the large cavity known as the wheel well, but will it rub on full turn left and right, especially if one goes over a bump during this tight maneuver?

Thank you for any hints or suggestions

John

I put 365s on our 08 and run 115psi. I bought the tires via fmca tire program and the wheels were a little over $400 ea. I think the tires were like $550 ea

Alcoa 10.5x22.5 model number 803601

Ours came with the 20,000# front axle, 10.5" wide wheels and 365/70 Michelin tires so naturally the wheel wells are sized to fit. We're at 18,030 loaded with us in the seats.

I should have added that the change to the 365/70 tires and 10.5" wide wheels occurred at unit 6986 and ours is 6999

Thanks for the great info

Mr D and IASM thank you for your great information. My biggest concern with the wheel/tire swap to 365/70 was rubbing something in a full lock turn. (I gather you have had no issues with this) I appreciate the insight of someone who has already done it!! To double check, do you both have a Dana IFS 84 front axle? (I suspected the axle was 20,000 lb rated but if it remained on the coaches when the 10.5" width wheel and 365/70 tire became standard equipment to get to 20k lbs, I should be good.) My coach is 6897, so a little early to have had the factory put the right stuff on.

I have spent a lot of time in Junction City but despite a large number of "old" Country Coach employees, no one was able to provide me with the info that the wheel/tires I asked them about had been std equip after my coach was made. Much info has been lost over time. To cross threads, with another one where you were talking about Winnebago loosing build sheets, I don't know about that, but when Ron Lee bought the business/IP back, most of the factory packages were lost. This being the complete custom set of drawings (elec, mech, air etc) for each coach, which includes exactly which options, accessory appliance was installed with all the manuals etc. They have a lot of generic drawings and some complete packages, but nothing specifically on my coach. (sorry, I digress).

P.S. My coach looks a lot like Mr D's and I am from the "other" Vancouver, some 300 miles north of you.

Our coach is 6882. It has the 18000lb dana-kirkstal front axle. The alcoa wheels are wider but the increase is about 1/4 inside with the remainder to the outside so axle clearance is not an issue. The tires are out a little more but I think it looks better

Here's the best way I've EVER found to keep track of the changes:

When CC made the change to the 20,000# front axle they went with a Reyco Granning IFS2000S3, dual steering box unit. The slave steering box took up the space under the step where they put a storage well in.

I'm getting new boots on my steering axle

Thank you Mr_D for the great information. I also spoke to the former head of Country Coach engineering (when my coach was built) and he mentioned they had to change out the steering box because the greater scrubbing of the bigger tires. (I'm not too concerned about this for me) He also confirmed that the body did not change from my coach to your coach. In summary, I have ordered a pair of the 803601 Alcoa Wheels and the XZA 365/70 tires, so I will feel much more comfortable about my front end weight (RV's not my weight)

Cheers

Footnote New Wheels and Tires on with miles on them

To update the story of increasing my steer axle load capability, I got the 2 new Michelin 365/70 tires and wider Alcoa wheels on my coach. I run them at 120 psi as opposed to the the 130 psi I had to use on the 315's. My biggest worry was fit and they do. They are no where near the body but get very close to the air bag in a full lock turn. No problem that I can tell.

One issue I found, unrelated to my setup, is that one of the tires, when it was very new, developed an air bubble on the sidewall. (2" x 3/4", oval). The shop that sold me the tires, got me a no charge replacement but it took 8 days to get the tire. I didn't realize this when I bought the tires originally, but the 365/70 Michelin which bacame the standard on my coach (steer and Tag) after mine was built and it is also the standard on the Prevost from end and tag, is not common and can be hard to get. Maybe not an issue when you are changing over and still driving on your 315's but a pain if you are traveling and have to replace one.

I now have about 2000 miles on the tires and the ride down the road is very nice (related a lot to the lower psi needed) and I have the peace of mind of a lot of head room in load limit for the wheels and tires. Note here, that while the wheels and tires are now rated at over 20,000 lbs for the front axle, the axle itself is still rated at 18,000 lbs, but I don't have concern about it. My actual weight on the front is about 18,000, +/- depending on fuel, water, waste etc on board.

I have a dead spot in the steering in the center, most noticeable when traveling straight down the freeway. (meaning I have to constantly adjust left and right to stay where I want). I had this before the wheel and tire change, but the effect may be worse now. I had a front end alignment at CC in Junction city last year and they said I didn't need to change the alignment for the new wheels/tires. I'm investigating the "dead spot" issue.

John
