Our step cover goes out fine and has always slowed down a bit coming back in.

Recently it has stopped about half way needing a slght push and then it would complete on its own.

Anyonw have a similar problem and what to look for?

When you push it back, does it feel like it is binding; like maybe lubricating the mechanism might help?

Doesn't feel like its binding.

Yesterday I inspected the supports/tracks and there weren't any loose screws or anything stuck to them.

I wiped them down and then applied a coat of wax. That seems to have helped in that it closed without any help but it did slow down more than usual about 1/2 way through the retract cycle.

You will find that they need a constant shot of good spray white grease almost every trip as they get a lot of dirt, moisture, guck. Even though they look clean it gets rusty quick. I had similar problem for a long time 'till I caught on to "more grease".

White grease will hold road dust,ect. in the slides. The frist thing I did was to remove the white gease and clean the slides with a heavy duty engine cleaner spray and then flush with a good water spray. then use a silcone lubricant, kwikke has ther own brand of lub.once a month to clean and lub. On my steps there is a pin that rotates back and forth each time the steps are used. To much friction in the slides and this pin will snap off and good bye $250 to reweld or $600 to replace.

As we are new owners of our present unit the steps got stuck out on our way home from the dealer, I took it apart to get it home then greased all the slides, found the step motor bolts loose and slightly bent, I replaced them with the next larger size bolts to take up the small amount of slop in the castings and have had no further problems.

Hmmm....how did we get from indoor steps cover to Kwikee outdoor steps?

I am having the same problem as the OP although during our 6 week trip ending yesterday, the problem gradually resolved itself (for now).

I thought maybe the electric contacts were bad but could not find any without disassembling the shaft cover. Will try lubrication from the underside of the cover.

How would a dry lube work instead of grease or silcone?

Jig-a-loo which works like WD40 as a spray but dries like silcone works quite well. Available thru menards. Doesn't collect dirt like WD40/white grease

I also recommend Jig-a-loo as it's slicker than baby snot.

Wally World also carries it.

I know you have solved your problem a long time ago - but for others let me help.
First we are talking about step well cover not power steps.

If the cover slides in and out by hand, that is free and not stuck etc, listen for the motor when applying power to extend or retract. If you hear the motor buzz and no action then the problem probably is: the gear on the motor shaft is loose and will not turn on track that is attached to the cover, it will just spin on the shaft. The gear is attached to the shaft by a single set screw. Remove motor and electrical connector, tighten the set screw and replace motor and connector.

Update:

Roadmaster Silicone spray on the rails seems to have corrected our problem of the Step Cover not closing.
