Tire and wheel problem with NTSB , ongoing.

I just ran across these rather serious problems Country Coach was. CC yryed to place the blame on TOYO tire having with the Factory recalls. Dates back to 1990 thru 2006 and effects all models. there were many recurring complaints and I an not sure the NTSb was ever satisfied with the final outcome. Reading the transcripts only tells half the story...Its no wonder they took Bankruptcy . Most of the blame lies with CC, that I can see. Toyo was apart, but I am sure not the total cause as CC was passing the buck off to.

Some of you oldtimers might remember the problems and the fixes. I know all the data plates were wrong as relates to overloaded axles and underrated tires and wheels. My questions are how much some of this remains and could apply to my Concept, especially its high weight numbers and capacities.

All this comes out front for me as I start to retire the Coach and the Michelins that have been in place over 10 years. I called the factory with specific questions, like rim width. They could not tell me if it was 8.25 inch or 9.00 width. They thought the steers had 9" rims as would be needed for the 315 /80m 22.5 tires., but thought the front were 9" and 8" for the 12R tires elsewhere.Which i found strange as they also require 9" rims. Their records were good and weights, etc, but no reference as to rim width could they confirm.I has started replacing the 12R for rear and tag but only ordered 2 Hankooks for the tag and I won't know the actual rim uses. The balance , in cluding the steers later this summer. Any knoledge from those who lived it would be helpfull.

Same here.

As I remember TOYO even refused to let it's dealers put TOYO tires on CC's for a while. The ban might still be in effect too.

We didn't own a CC back then so I wasn't paying that much attention.

My rig was covered under the recall.

I had all six tires replaced for free in 2002.

New Toyo's replaced the seven year old Michelins of the same size.

A new placard was provided.

That issue was an incorrect tire pressure recorded on the Placard thereby directing owners to under inflate their tires.

(When I weighed the rig, the weight on the front axle was about 200 lbs below the GAWR. To carry the weight with the 10R-22.5 tires provided by CC the tire pressure needed to be at 115 psi, which also is the max tire psi rating.)

in the complaints filed there was also statement that the tires on the steer were not able to handle the actual wt. that was on a lot of CC s. I have an original sales sheet for my coach and it does say 315/80 22.5 , so I wonder if the recall ( there were over 5 of them ) did not apply to every coach built. ? Remarks were made that the real problem was air pressure and a lot of tires fitted could not handle the needed PSI. Just for my pease of mind I really should put the Concept on a scale and see just what wt. I am carrying on the steer. Thats also where the wheel width comes to play. When you use 8" width on say 12R tires the tire maker will derate the carrying capacity and will not stand behind the install. I hate to have to buy new drive wheels, we will see I guess. ( problem my coach is 1600 miles away getting new tag axle replaced.)

On my wheels the information is close to the rim on the "dish" side of the wheel. Easy to read on the drive axle--I suspect the info is on the inner side of the front wheel. It has the width (8.25), load rating (7000lbs.) and max tire pressure (120psi). My max front load is 13220lbs, which is the allowable load of the two front tires, so I always keep the fronts at 120psi.

You have your answer. It would be good to weigh all axles and compare the tire rating and inflation levels to the weights you have.

On our Magna the owners manual has specific instructions to keep the tires set to the pressures on the sticker. That corresponds to the maximum rating of the axle. The ride is smooth, quiet and the tires run cooler than on any other MH we've had over the last 27 years.

Well, yes I knew that, but at the same time it is important to know my options once I see reality . I also can see a lot of RV folks who find all this less than exciting. If I recall the comments to the text of the complaints ( just type in "Country Coach recalls" and you can read most of it ) did talk about fatalities and it was not just CC; .

CC bankruptcy had nothing to do with the tire recall in the late 90's. The BK was due to very poor management decisions

My'02 Intrigue came with Toyo tires and when I went to replace them I was told that Toyo would not allow their tires be installed on a CC. This has since gone away and a lot of owners are now installing Toyo tires

All good results.

Given the questionable management team of that era, driving the Company into bankruptcy, and their prior history under the National RV umbrella, you might want to check the assumptions.

Prior to getting my free tires, my old rig ran quietly and smoothly but under inflated, although inflated to the placard.

Peralko said it. On the dish area near the bead on the drive wheels. Not bear the coach but it's likely on the inside of steer axle wheels. Mine are 8.25s.
