Upgrade hitch receiver on 2006 Affinity

Hi— I'm looking into upgrading to a class V 2.5" receiver to give me additional safety buffer. Has anyone already done this on a 2006 - 2008 Affinity? Thanks!

A Class 5 2.5" hitch is rated to 21,000 lbs. What are the capacities of your RV? What hitch do you presently have? A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, a bigger hitch doesn't make anything safer. What are you planning to tow, a second RV?

My Affinity already has a 2.5" receiver but is only rated for 7000#. Is this a cya protocol or can I tow more than 7k with a 2.5" receiver.

Next to the driver's seat on the wall should be a placard with your weights. What is your GVWR, (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating)? Just putting on a larger receiver doesn't increase your towing capacity.

Understood. I think the difference adds up to 7k which is supposed to include passengers, fuel, water, waste, personal effects, and towables.

your vehicle is limited by its GVWR that is everything including tongue weight of the the trailer.
The next limitation is GVCW (combined weight) that is not actual weight but GVWR of the RV PLUS GVWR of the trailer, if you exceed the capacity and have any accidents or get stopped your not gonna like the results.

so if your RV has a GVWR of 43000 and a combined weight of 50000 the most you can tow is a vehicle with a GVWR of less than 7000lb so you can tow the f150 with the GVWR of 6900 but not the f250 with the GVWR of 8900
Fines are super stiff for exceeding GVWR and combined rating
The RV will tow it but is not rated for it

Upgrade hitch receiver on 2006 Affinity

I would believe a 2006 Affinity would have at a minimum 10K as the hitch rating? My 09 has 15K and the chassis/body is similar other than the 09 front axle is rated for 20K.

Thoughts?

My '09 Magna is rated for towing 15,000#'s also. Not sure what the hitch is rated for as it's a 2" square.

Appreciate the concerns about the numbers. I've done the math and everything is kosher. The CC receiver that came with our bus is rated for 15k. However is has a flaw. It is slightly larger than 2" causing the hitch to be slightly slanted. This puts too much weight on the bottom lip of the receiver. Ours began to crack. Upgrading to a class V will fix the issue and give me an extra safety margin. Our goes in for surgery in the morning. I was hoping someone on the list had already completed so I could verify.
