9 yrs ago I purchased an 8000 grain ON-The-GO Brand water softener.
We were FT traveling at the time and used it a lot in the SW US (TX,NM,AZ, CA etc)
2 adults ......would have to regen roughly every 7-10 days
30 minutes to do regen using a box of table salt.
Kept scale from accumulating on faucets, shower, toilet bowl and inside water heater.
OK for drinking BUT wasn't good for making coffee
Now they have larger units available.
Doesn't much matter which BRAND as they use same resins/methods of softening and use table salt to regen.
SO buy one that is lowest pricing and at least 8000 grain system
Higher grain units can go longer between regens
8000 grain means it can process 800 gallons if hardness is 10ppb (if 50ppb then only 160 gallons)

I have the 16000 grain ON-The-GO Brand water softener. I have had it for 2 years works great. I have everything set up with Brass push on fittings plus an in line house filter before it goes into the softener, quick setup, so far so good. Just want to keep the ice maker and washing machine clean of build up.

We have the 8000 On The Go softener and have used it the past 2 years, especially when traveling in the west and southwest. It really makes a difference in softening the water. It is easy to recharge/regen and seems to last about one week for the two of us.

We have a Watts Flopur 10000 grain and it lasted for over two months before needing to be regenerated, and this was in the southwest.

Basically X's 2 for us. We did add an under the kitchen sink filter to provide drinking water into the coach. We have turned off our Samsung auto ice maker, and just use two trays filled from the higher filtration of the drinking water faucet.
We both really like the water softener...
Best,
Smitty

How do you secure the water softener when in use?
My rig would require a basement cabinet to remain unlocked if stored inside the basement.
The double size OnThe Go seems to have no security facilitating attachments for a bike cable or similar.

Right now it is just sitting next to the rear wheel, unsecured. Hadn't thought about locking it up. I would think you could get a long plastic coated cable, wrap it around the top and pad lock it to the pedestal.

A total different approach that does not require regen with salt.
https://www.filterwaterdirect.com/pr...water-softener
I have had this unit for about a year now and as far as I can tell it is doing a good job. We spend about 3 months in the Palm Springs area and then travel in Ariz. and other places with hard waterr.

Don't you have a house filter located on the PS in the bay.

John:
That just looks too small and simple to do an ample amount of filtering.

I secure mine to the pedestal with a chain and lock. However, it is so heavy, maybe 50 lbs, I doubt someone would just walk off with it.

Yes we have a full house filter, now using RV Water Filter stores F1Pb 10" cartridge.
As was pointed out to me by Dick, it's great to have good filtering for drinking and cooking via the enhanced filtration cartridge we have under the kitchen sink, but still showering a brushing your teeth in the water coming into the coach, or out of the tank. So we stepped up to the F1Pb.
Best,
Smitty
