I have been using Zep on the vertical side panels of the rig where the clear coat peels in sheets from the white color areas. In those areas, clear coat had been applied over gel coat. No base coat paint was used.
I strip the clear coat with a razor blade, apply Bartender's Friend and then apply 5 coats of Zep. It is a good 3 foot solution appearance wise.
I have just completed replacing the clear coat on the three crown edges of the roof. To do that, I sanded, applied primer, base coat, and clear coat. This process was done on the brow of the rig in 2003 and is still solid today. The three paints are designed to bond to each other.
Just applying a fresh coat of clear coat over the gel coat resulted in success for only about two years.
