My Coach Steps stopped working. My plan is to order the whole step assembly, approx $420, rather than ordering the motor, gear box and module. It won't cost that much more and will look prettier. Any tips? I have to get the steps to extend to get at the four bolts. Any ideas?

Have you checked The power supply and the magnetic switches first?

I do have power to them and the door switch is working. It does not use the magnetic system. Thanks

The fastest and easiest is to remove the connector arm that moves the step in and out. This is done on my step by driving out a pin on the step side of the arm.
Good luck. I also agree replacing the entire step assembly with new motor, steps, control arm and controls is the best way to go.
Good luck.

Thanks Jim, I think I know which pin you are referring to. It has a hairpin through one end.

Unless you just want a new step, with the step connector pin removed, and the steps out of the way, check to see if you have voltage at the motor plug in when it should be running.

If you do, pull the motor, inside is a thermal, spring contact, that will oxidize and prevent the motor from running.

Just use a very fine piece of sandpaper to clean the contacts, and you will be good to go.

Also if you find the motor is bad, on mine, the motor is a Ford power window motor.

Bob,
No way, going by the price, I am sure mine came out of a Mercedes

The step motor pictured is from a Kwikee step.

Our step has stopped a couple of times over the past several months so yesterday I took the motor and gear assembly off to check it out. Inside of the gearbox I found grease that was almost solid. Inside the motor assemble I found that the brushes were good but the armature needed a little attention so I used 600 wet/dry sand paper and cleaned up the armature. Then I cleaned all the grease out and regreased everthing. Reassembled it all only to have the step work backwards! Door closed step went out, door open step went in. I rotated the motor housing (contains the permanent magnets) 180 degrees and the steps now work properly!

Total cost of repar was less than $5.00 and a couple of hours of my time.
