Jayco White Hawk

I have not had a trailer for 25 years. Mostly motorhomes. I am considering buy a Jayco and pulling it with either a Dodge or Ford 1/2 ton.

The White Hawk looks interesting. I like the lines of the front end and the layout of the 27 foot model the has the two chairs in the back.

Would like to hear from any owners of this model or maybe an equivalent model from Jayco. Also what are you pulling it with? Any with the ford or dodge 1-2 tons?

Thanks.

Steve

Steve - We have a 2014 White Hawk 29REKS that we really like. It has the double opposing slides that really open up the rear entertainment area. There are a couple of things that we wish were a little different. The bedroom area is a little tight - pretty typical for all front bedroom floorplans since the offset is more living area space. The other thing is that when the slides are in, you can't open the refrigerator since the curb side slide goes from the refrigerator all the way to the back. I'm also considering removing the little front refrigerator in the storage area to get some more storage since we don't really use it much. I pull the TT with a 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe and an Equal-I-zer hitch. It handles fine for the Midwest and southeast, but I wouldn't want to take it west through the mountains with the 5.3 engine.

I have a '16 28DSBH, and at 8500# gross weight, it's a touch larger and heavier than the model you're looking at. Previously I had a Surveyor SV264 and if memory serves it had a gross weight of about 6500#. I pulled it with an '11 F-150. I knew I would be getting a larger trailer so I bought the bigger truck, first. I had always thought the F-150 was a bit weak for the smaller trailer, but friend's Rams and Chebbys didn't do any better... and all were adequate. I bought 3/4-ton diesel power because I actually thought I'd get a bigger trailer than I ended up with. Now that I have the new trailer, I'm glad to have the 3/4-ton. As to the diesel... you'd have to decide about that. A gasser would pull what I have but would probably struggle in some of the places we go.

1/2 Ton - Dodge and Ford

Only speaking of your last question - pulling with a Ford or Dodge 1/2 ton, I had both during my stint with the same travel trailer.

My experience - The Ford F-150 Screw with the ecoboost is the best pulling vehicle I've driven for a 1/2 ton option (I still drive it). Go to youtube and look up "ecoboost torture test". I know it is essentially a Ford infomercial, but it's pretty interesting and fun to watch. The torque and power were night and day when pulling a trailer for me.

The Dodge with the 5.7 Hemi sans trailer was more fun to drive. It's loud, quick (felt quicker to me when not hauling a trailer), and a nice ride.

But when pulling, it is only adequate. I had no idea how much strain the Dodge was under until I pulled the same trailer with the F-150 and it made it seem effortless.

This was with the same trailer, same load, same WDH. Just my opinion.

Good luck!

We love our 2016 White Hawk 27 DSLR.
You can see details and mods at http://www.stormpod.org

Tow with 2000 GMC Sierra 1500. Have towed to FL, NC, GA, MI, IN from Southwest Ohio without problems.

We have a 27 DSRL and pull it with a 2010 F150. No problem.

It's a great trailer for a couple.
