12.5 kw replacement with 7K or 8K

Hi everyone. Have a 1999 Monaco Sig with a 12.5 Onan that I have had two factory service centers tell me that the armature shaft is cracked and needs to be replaced. Not sure how they know without breaking down the generator but they both said the same issue. Must be true, right? Anyway, part is no longer made by Onan (I was shocked, shocked to learn the part was no longer available) and cannot be found used or new anywhere on the plant earth that has been checked. (I still think there is a brand new one sitting on a rack in some warehouse somewhere but everyone thinks that). Anyway, new replacement gen looking at around 11K. Not real motivated to spend that amount on something that I only would use to travel or rest stop to run A/C. Was wondering what the thought would be to replace with say a 7K or 8K. Yes, know could not run all the A/C units at the same time and what have you but would be able to run at least one maybe two of the units. Rebuilt units can be had for about a third of the cost.

Not sure why it wouldn't work other then the wiring since the 12.5KW is a 240 volt generator and he 7.5 & 8 KW are 120 volt. Do you have any appliances that run on 240 volt? Best way to check is to see if you have any double pole breakers in your service panel.

As far as power, the 7.5 KW generator will put out ~63 amp which would be plenty for at least 2 AC's.

Your sig probably uses a lot of power. Why not look for a used unit. Maybe a 10. Colaws may gave something. There used to be a place in Minnesota that sold used units. Try Mr. Google

Either a 7 or 8KW will run 2 AC's together.

I did see one at Colaws inside the warehouse about a month ago.

IMHO, I would look at a 10KW genny if you are set on not repairing or replacicing 12kw, should be an easy install.

Wireing would be simpler as they are both 240V generators.

You will need either a 10k, or a 12.5k for the reasons stated above.
Here is a link to used ones:

Another option is a small Honda generator and then use an adapter to plug your shore cord into it. You will not be able to power the entire coach.

Agree. Look for a 10k unit. Likely near direct swap. More availability.

An option would be to replace the generator section only on your generator. Inside the Onan enclosure is an Isuzu diesel engine and a generator section. You may be able to find a generator section with some diligent searching. I did this several years ago and found the part I needed at Simonson Generator Service, Phone: (520) 889-9581.
Most large towns will have a privately owned generator shop. The Cummins owned shops will be high priced and want to use only new or certified parts. Either a 10k or 12k Onan generator section will work on your unit.

A rebuilt generator section will be much easier to locate than an armature.

Thank you one and all for the insight and recommendations. Thought about the 10KW but not a whole lot of price difference with the 12K so you might as well go with the 12K. My objection was the cost on something that I really would not and have not used that much. But when you need it you need it I suppose. The used ones with warranty is not that far off the new price for me to take a chance. Couple of K's but not trying to sound like it doesn't matter but piece of mind with a new one vs. used is enough for me to justify the extra cost in my mind. I guess I have all winter to work this through and decide which way to go. In the mean time back to the things that I can make a difference on with out having to refinance the rig!!
