2001 Diplomat Dash A/C throwing belts.

So I have replaces the entire Dash air system for the most part. And it works! But then it throws the belt and stops working. UGH!!!!!

I have never been able to find a belt after it has thrown it so I am not sure if the whole belt is coming off or slowly being ground down. I just know after a few hours of working very well the belt comes off and is gone.

So short of putting a new belt on and standing there and watching it I am not sure what could be causing it. It looks aligned right, both pulleys have the right tension. So I am just not sure what is going on.

What causes these things to throw belts?

FYI, if you want some History on the issues I have been having with Dash Air on this thing see this thread. As I said as long as belt is one all the other fixes have it working great.

Many vehicles have a dash air belt that is too small for the load it must carry. Thus the belt tension must be exactly right or it will slip and burn up.

If the pulleys are in good shape and in-line and you have the correct belt for the pulleys (Same width so the belt rides even with the top of the pulleys and the same angle so both sides touch the pulley all the way down) then the problem is likely the belt tension.

I have two suggestions :

1 - Look at the pulleys. If they are polished smooth as I am sure they are, use a file or scraper to roughen the sides of the V groove. This will give the belt more grip to start and overcome the prior failures.

2 - Re-tension the belt after running it for a few hours. It should only need to be done once for the life of the belt. The belt will initially stretch, but after it is re-tensioned it should be good to go.

Hope this fixes your last problem. Dash air is wonderful and don't feel like the Lone Ranger, my Freightlner chassis has the same problem.
