2001 Diplomat Generator Maintenance

Hi,
I have a 2001 38' Diplomat I purchased a couple of years ago. I have very much enjoyed it, and am looking forward to getting it out of winter storage and using it again this summer. This is my 1st RV and I have been doing all the maintenance myself on it, learning as I go, but enjoying it non the less. I am going to change the oil & filter on my generator this spring, but wondered what other preventative maintenance work I should do ? I have read other threads on here about brushes and belts, but don't know anything about these. I didn't know it had a belt, and haven't seen one, but I guess it does. It has been running good, no real issues. I did run it out of fuel once and it was really hard to get re-started. After that it always seems like it turns over a few more times now that it used to, but I may just be paying attention to it more now, I'm not sure. I've also had a couple times where it smoked allot, especially on start up, but I think I've attributed that to dirty fuel. It would smoke every time I started it, then once I got new fuel it stopped. I travel across the country, and would like to prevent any break downs on the road that I can, so any suggestions on good regular maintenance tips, spare parts to carry ect would be much appreciated
Thanks
Michael

I assume you have an Onan diesel generator. Since you have owned it several years and are asking about maintenance I also assume it has not been serviced in awhile. Based on that I would do the following:
Clean the spark arrestor
Change the fuel filter and also carry a spare
Check and probably replace the belt, keep the old belt as an emergency spare
Drain, flush and refill the radiator
Make sure the coolant fins on the radiator and inverter are clean
Change the air filter
Change the oil and filter

I think Dsallach covered it all.
