2007 Diplomat door awning won't retract

after unpacking from a trip this weekend we parked the motorhome as usual and all was well. When we were outside we noticed the door awning had extended and have no idea how that happened...it was fully retracted when parked and locked up. Now the awning will not retract.

we have tried to bend the arms inward while the switched was held to retract--nothing happened. Same with trying to extend.

we certainly can't drive it anywhere to get it fixed. Can anyone help with a possible solution?

Do you hear the motor trying to run? I would probably start by removing the end cap where the motor is and if no motor sound checking the wires for voltage. The owners manual states you can operate the motor directly by running wires from a car battery etc. It also shows a Relay Module which could be bad. I suspect if necessary in order to close the awning by hand you will need to disengage the motor as the gearing is such that it probably will not turn by hand when pushing on the bar or arms.

Door awnings come out by the motor unwinding and spring arms pushing it out. My guess is at the end of the motor it has a gear which broke and let the awning come out. It happen to me on the freeway doing 65, you can push it in and tie it with a large zipp tie or rope until you can get it fixed.Since it broke while it was closed the motor is not going to run because it thinks it's close.

X-2 what Roosta said.
Ours did the same thing. We had to take it apart and replace the motor. ( we couldn't just replace the broken gearing)
Good Luck

Here's a link on where to buy a new tube motor. The picture is wrong on the link but this worked for us.

Amazon.com: Carefree R001189 Tubular Motor: Automotive

Thanks!

we want to thank everyone for their help in getting our awning problem resolved. After checking the fuse (that turned out to be okay) and being unable to keep it closed to the unit we found a local RV repair who came to the house. Deidrich's in Coeymans, NY was terrific to work with and it was determined it was the motor that had gone bad. We decided to replace the entire unit as it was covered under our extended contract. Again, thanks for the help!!
